Correct. The big publishing houses all publish ebooks and that is the bulk of ebook sales (thru kindle, nook, etc.) Self publishing is a different animal. There are some real success in self publishing...and really, if you just want your book published, it is a great route. But in today's world, if you want to make significant money, getting a literary agent and getting your book published by one of the big ones (Harper Collins, Simon Schuster, Scholastic, etc.) is still the way to go.

I agree...he is an example of it and yes, it does sound like a late night infomercial. Amanda Hocking is a HUGE success story of self publishing. Joe Konrath is another one - but he started out with traditional publishing houses, so he had a built in fandom when he decided to self publish. So, there are definite examples of success...but then there are thousands and thousands who had no or very limited success. I do see the value in self publishing, but just not in making lots of money unless you are the rare exception...but many don't care about monetary success, they just want their book out there.

Good luck, TKDave. If I learned anything from Eco's Foucault's Pendulum there's nothing more desperate than the SPA (self-publishing author).
