when we were in puerto vallarta last month, i misplaced one of my novolog pens. after tearing the room apart, we couldn't find it anywhere. i probably would have had enough to last the rest of the trip on basically a carb-free diet, but we decided to see if we could find some in town.
we took a taxi to walmart there and i showed them one of my empty pens and asked if they had that. she said they had one left, and grabbed it. it was identical except the novo nordisk label read "insulina rapida." she rang it up, and the register showed $150. i groaned as i got my visa out and swiped it, but i understood that $150 is about the going rate for one pen in the u.s. then, i looked at my receipt -- 150 mexican pesos. that's $14. the hmo model is so screwed up.Te Occidere Possunt Sed Te Edere Non Possunt Nefas Est.Comment

Ever consider going to a pump? A diabetic co-worker of mine kept extolling the virtues of insulin pumps for her as well as her diabetic daughter. You know, so many drugs in this category, it is a crap shoot to guess.
Drugs are expensive, but our culture has made them so. To get a drug to market is just terribly expensive and even after it is to market there is still the liability it will cause patients to grow an 11th digit (or tendon rupture in obese 70 year olds that aren't active and just happen to tear their achiles). Drug companies have to turn a profit...that is why they are in business. Your "cheap" foreign drugs really are just the same thing here. Dang, can't remember the economic term...pricing based upon ability to pay. It is more economically efficient.
Quite frankly, I'm happy that I can prescribe plavix, synthroid, argatriban (heparin induced thrombocytopenia sucks). All of those drugs have trade-names that, essentially, are the only option. You can get generic synthroid, but it sucks. one day, if I get some nasty MDR MRSA, I'll be happy for drug companies and their greed.
Having said that, I think some of the enantiomers of certain meds are useless. If there is a generic, I write for it (except synthroid).
One question...if you are so unhappy about the cost of your humalog, why not use syringes instead of the pen? It is cheaper, though not as user friendly. You don't strike me as somebody that wouldn't be able to figure out how to draw up 4 units. The pen is $100 more for 100 units.
