    Have you ever called 911?

Today I called 911, not the first time in my life to do so. Fisrt time I think I reported a car accident I witnessed. Anyway, tonight driving home from the movie theater there was a man walking straight down the road into oncoming traffic on a main highway. We almost ran him over (it was dark, Virginia is poorly lit and he was dark skinned and wearing a black t-shirt). I have no idea if he was drunk or had a death wish but for his safety and others I though I should report it and so I called. Operator said they had just gotten another report of the same thing and had sent out a car to find him.

This got me thinking, how many other people have called 911 and what it was for?

So many times I can't remember them all.

I called last week because I saw the same guy riding his bike slowly around my neighborhood at 11AM and again at 6PM. He was taking his time, looking at each and every house; I'd never seen him before. It never hurts to let someone know that you've noticed them. I tried the non-emergency line, but my town is so small that they close the office down after 5PM. I sent the mayor a message on facebook, and he said to call 911, so I did.

I called it in New Orleans about gunshots in the night at least twice, if not more.

Once, we were coming over the viaduct on Jefferson Davis Ave over I-10, and there was a car broken down on the downslope of the viaduct. If we'd been in the right lane, CRASH. I was in the left lane. I called 911 and told them to send someone immediately with their sirens and lights going because if not someone was going to get killed.

On the way back from Florida last week, I almost called 911 because there was a man, an old man, leaning against a trashcan in the gas station parking lot clutching his chest. I ran over to him right as his daughter was pulling up in their van. She gave him a nitro pill and we got him into the van so they could rush him to the hospital.

Only once when I was first on a scene of a terrible accident right by the 15-215 interchange at about 3am. A Toyota SUV had rolled several times. The driver had been ejected and laid facedown about half way up the steep hill next to the shoulder there. He was easily a 100 yards from his vehicle. Somehow, during ejection his clothes had been almost completely torn off and he lay there barely breathing with some deep puncture wounds. I gave orders to my roommate who was trying to tend to him as the 911 operator relayed them to me. The vehicle was upside down and I crawled under to see if there were any other passengers. There were none, but there was an empty car seat in the back with some random baby toys and clothing strewn about on the road. I waded through the knee high grass along the shoulder praying that I would find nothing. Thankfully I didn't. Police and paramedics arrived a bit later. They got him into an ambulance but then the ambulance didn't leave. He was gone. I looked for an obit for about 2 weeks after this and never saw anything.

        Twice.

A guy was snooping around my backyard in Houston late at night and the police picked him up down the street.

And one time I ended up driving behind an obviously severely intoxicated driver, lurching from one curb to the other through a residential neighborhood. I actually followed this guy as I called 911 because I was sure he was going to kill somebody.

Only one time that I can remember. I was waiting at a stop light and a van next to me opened the sliding back doors and out jumped a bunch of guys in ski masks with guns. They just sort of ran around the car and then hopped back in. I assumed they were teenagers and the guns were fake, but it scared the crap outta me, and I wanted the police to scare them right back! The 911 operator said they had already received a few calls so I am hoping the police were ticked by the time they found them!

I never have called 911. But my two year old son has (twice).

When my oldest was maybe 10 months old, I let him play with the phone on the floor while I put on my makeup. Once I was done, I hung up the phone, scooped him up and headed out the door of our apartment. Luckily we ran into our neighbor on the way out because not long after we left, the police came to our house and was going to break down the door when no one answered it. But before he did, he knocked on my neighbor's and asked if she knew anything about the 911 call that came from next door. She told him that she just saw us leave and that she was sure we were fine.

I dialed 911 when my youngest was just a few weeks old. I had squirted some saline up his nose in an effort to loosen up some of the junk up there. I guess I squirted too much, because he aspirated some, started choking, and stopped breathing. I freaked out and dialed 911, but by the time I explained to the operator what happened, he started breathing again and was fine. She still sent the fire department over.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

I did once while driving down I-15 one night back when it was only three lanes. The semi was in the middle, but he was drifting so much, he'd be in the right lane one second, then in the left lane the next. It looked to me as if the driver was drowsy (or completely asleep), so I called 911 to get someone to pull the guy over. I gave them the description and license plate number, and followed the semi (no way was I passing him) until my exit came up. I never saw if someone pulled him over or not.
                Not that, sickos.

Several times. 4 or so for my little boy....we needed paramedics assistance. Once when I was car jacked at gunpoint. And most recently when I was in a car accident with 2 other cars and my wife's car was totaled.

I've called 911 once in my life. When I was a kid, probably about 7 or so, I was practicing for some silly cub scout candle lighting ceremony thing in a farmer's field near our house in Orem. There was some pretty dry shrubbery around, and as you can imagine, I started a big fire. Totally freaked me out, so I ran into my house, called 911, and then sprinted out to the corner of our street so I could help direct the firetrucks to the fire. After that, I took off and hid in the woods so nobody could find me because I was certain I was about to be murdered. That was my first indication scouting was no good.

Was everyone ok from the accident? I don't know why, but it makes me laugh knowing you were driving around town in her car. Not really your style. Did the car survive?

I'm amazed that he survived. An airbag must have saved his life.
