  • How do I exchange dollars for Euros while stateside?

Also I would really appreciate it if one of you worldly travelers could point me to a location that is nearby my home. I live in Riverdale, Utah. Thanks in advance.

Your bank should do it. I've exchanged Philippine Pesos at my bank for the going rate several times.

When I went to France in 2008, the bank in the Salt Lake airport had euros you can exchange for USD. They probably still do, but I can't confirm. I think there was a slight markup on the exchange rate, but it was a convenient way to get some cash for incidentals before I could hit an ATM overseas.

Oh, and don't forget to call your bank and tell them you'll be traveling and what dates, else they often block foreign transactions on your cards.

Great tip on calling my bank. Thanks.

The cheapes way is to hit an ATM at the airport when you land. I wasn't charged a fee for the withdrawal and I got a good rate. ATMs are all over in Europe.

Otherwise, a larger bank should do it for a fee. If you are in Utah I know Zions (downtown branch) used to do exchanges.

I knew there was a reason I liked you, despite simultaneously rolling my eyes at most of your politcal and BYU/Utah posts. As a kid I used to ride my bike to Champion Meats to buy penny candy.

And Champion Meats is still there, although it never occured to me to check out the candy counter. I have had him kill some steers for me though. I occasionally see some pretty nice Elk going in there now.

The Econoline Express gas station put the candy counter at Champion Meats out of business, from what I understand. A few years after moving away, I visited my cousins there, and that's where we went for candy.

I totally misread his question. I had it reversed. I thought he was bringing home Euros and wanted to change them for dollars. I agree with you. ATM's in the country are the way to go. You'll get a much better exchange rate than using a money changer in the airports.

Thanks all. I'm ashamed to admit I've found a Chase Bank which I walked past this morning on my constitutional that will do it in 2 days time.

I agree with CJF, this is the best and least expensive way. Get off the plane and go to an ATM in the airport.
