Agree with SpaceGhost on this one. DSL blows chunks. I don't like Comcast much but they are the best option available for high speed Internet in Utah.Originally posted by Space GhostBandwidth may be better, but how is the latency? My (very limited) experience with Qwest has not been good in that regard. If you do any gaming or remote shell access, you may notice a significant difference.
One other thing... I've been with Comcast for 10 years now, my IP has changed 4x during that span - or, effectively static. Qwest seems to want to issue you a new IP every other day. That's a deal breaker ladies!
cheers.

as good as effectively static is, i really needed to lease a real static ip and comcast does not have that option. that was disappointing.Originally posted by Space GhostBandwidth may be better, but how is the latency? What is the benefit of a static IP on your home account? Just wondering.Originally posted by Space GhostBandwidth may be better, but how is the latency? I have to call in every year and negotiate a service price with them...but I have had almost zero problems with service for the past couple of years.
So, today, I received a bill from them. I have two tivos, so I have some cable cards with them that I am charged a couple of dollars total every month. Fine. But today, the bill had this on it: Outlet Service, Qty 3 @ $8 each for $24. What is that? I do have their little digital box, so I thought maybe it was for that...I called in. The rep explained that those little digital boxes are free. This Outlet Service charge is to "transmit the service to the cable card.' WHAT? I am being charged $8 for an electric transmission of my cable to go to the Cable Card (which already decodes it? She said that is what it is for. I then explained that the service is already transmitted and that it is the cable card that does the work. She told me that is the charge. ARE YOU FRAKKIN' KIDDING ME???? They are charging me $8 to transmit a transmission that is already there feeding my tv and then charging me for the cable card as well?
Yeah, I am now waiting for a phone call from a manager.
OK, so they called back. I am being charged for the use of the HD and high digital channels (increased bandwidth, etc.). I still do not agree with it...and basically I am being charged almost as much as I would if I used their boxes. So, I am kinda being penalized for using Tivo. With that said, they told me that the charges occurred without being informed...and he suspended the charges for 1 year. Yay. COMCAST IS THE BEST...why do you all hate Comcast so much?

Comcast's "power boost" is the biggest ripoff ever. If you go to any "power boost" aproved sites, you get your full internet connection. Anything else on the web is throttled, including netflix and for a time Xbox live (which are 2 services you want a good connection for). Speedtest.net is one of these power boost sites, so the connection quality you see there is better than your connection really is. They also block sites they don't approve of, currently blocking thepiratebay.orgOriginally posted by NorthwestUteFan View Post

UPDATE: Comcast has issued the following statement to BGR: “We’re not blocking PirateBay [The Pirate Bay] and reports online indicate users from several ISPs around the world are affected. We have FAQs about our network management practices available here.”Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Interesting.
I don't actually pay for the Power Boost thing, but "I got a guy...". The tech who set me up had the first modem die, and only had the "fast" modem in the truck. He gave me the fast one and set it up so it still works fast, but I pay the lower rate.
I have heard about the Netflix throttling, but I don't have an HD tv so I have not yet noticed it.
My kids are too young and I don't have time for XBox Live and PS3, so I don't have those yet.

They're also making netflix pay a fee to provide you services at all.

I've found that this is one of the things to watch for. I had a technical issue that I complained about and when I threatened to cancel they knocked my price down to a significantly lower level. I asked if that was a permanent change and they assured me it was. Six months later it popped back up and the customer service rep informed me that they can't do permanent changes, they can only do six month "promotional pricing." So they lowered it again, but it'll go back up in six.Originally posted by Eddie View PostI went on to tell them that with the cost of TV, as much as I like their service - as soon as I get a couple of trees cutting down I'll be switching that too. They quickly reduced my TV bill, hoping I'll stick around. But I noticed it was bumped back up again this month.
At which point I'm hoping we will have successfully risen up and toppled the evil Cable empire.Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...
None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.
I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

I've been using Veracity for my internet here in Utah County. I like it quite a bit more than Comcast, which we used until about 2 months ago when we moved. Fiber is the way to go."To the man who only has a hammer, everything he encounters begins to look like a nail."

Would that I could get fiber in South Jordan.
