Cinco de Mayo, I had no idea...

that it's not Mexico's Independence Day:
Contrary to widespread popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico, which occurs on September 16th.

My understanding is that May 5th is a regional holiday in the state of Puebla that celebrates a victory of the Mexican Army over (who else?) France. Corona Beer jumped all over it many years ago as a marketing campaign that has fooled gringos all across the US.

No kidding. We should all celebrate the anniversary of the Mexican army beating the Frenchies.

                    Who hasn't beaten the French?

Leave to the Mexicans to celebrate that.

In France's defense, there was a Napoleon running the show.

                      Unfortunately, it was Napoleon III.

The surprise to me was that they don't even acknowledge this "holiday" in most of Mexico. In Born in East L.A., Cheech and another Mexican, after illegally crossing the border:

Yeah, this is basically an American holiday. Mexicans in the U.S. don't really celebrate it much. Sept. 16, on the other hand, causes them to drape mexican flags all over their cars and drag up and down main street.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.
