    Mother's Day

Last night, a lady in my ward made the comment that really irritated me. We were talking about past Mother's Day gifts from the ward, etc. She said that when she was younger, before she had kids even, she would get offended because they would always asks moms to stand up to be recognized. She said, "Just because I didn't have children yet doesn't mean I should be left out." Um, ok. It's MOTHER'S DAY. She went on to say that it needs to be worded "18 and up women" instead of "moms". I was at a birthday party and wanted to play nice so I quickly changed the subject to Scentsy, LOL.

What does your ward typically do or what are they planning for this year? My dad has always made sure the women are spoiled with a yummy brunch or lunch. I remember my mom always getting the same flowers when I was a kid. Our ward in Boise gave us chocolates from Weiser Classic Candy...mine happened to be the coffee bean kind . Our current ward gave out a free church booklet last year, but did a full dinner for the widows and divorcees. I think that's crap.

My calling is the RS Activity Leader, so this year the bishop's wife and I are planning a nice lunch for all the moms.

You know what they have been doing here in our ward for years. In fact, I think last year I posted my rant at being in charge of it for the first time. Well the week before last in Ward Council, Mother's Day came up and the Bishop said we're not doing anything because there is no room in the budget for anything, and certainly not for anything like this ward has produced which have been a full-on luncheon by a chef who has his own restaurant here in our ward. Yay! I don't think the sisters will be too happy about it. The RS president asked if it could come out of their budget, but the Bishop said that the production had grown to be too much and wouldn't allow it.

Thank goodness. The relief society is a massive drain on the ward budget. They do a lot of good but so do the other auxiliaries And none of them spend as much money on themselves, not even close. Wtf do you need a brunch out of the ward budget? Have your husband do something nice for you. Why the need for multiple meals and standing up in front of everyone so that you can get some pat on the back and free candy?

      Sorry ladies, I'm taken!

Maybe you people should start calling it Possibles/Probables Day.

Every year my dad did the same thing. He said,"Well. She isn't MY mother." Now you all know why I am so messed up.

LOL. I think it's safe to say that women are more sentimental to Mother's Day than men are to Father's Day. I am sure the other ladies on the board will agree that a day to honor them as a mother is nice. I understand that there are those that aren't moms yet or can't have children and this may create an awkwardness for them. I remember that feeling, but it gave me something to look forward to...being a mom. It's definitely a fine line because you don't want anyone to be offended or get their feelings hurt.

Happy Mother's Day to anyone with a vagina, including pre-ops. Unless of course you hate Mother's Day, then I hope you have a nice Sunday.

Happy Mother's Day to all! I love Mother's Day. I am in my accustomed role as substitute Primary Chorister, so the regular chorister can go to Relief Society (wouldn't she rather be here? I know I would). I just finished singing time, where I mostly got the kids completely amped up so they will pay no attention to sharing time. Now both the substitute pianist and I are on our phones looking at BYU sports sites (he just showed me the "Osama got Jimmered" picture). I need to get this as my full-time calling.

That complaint just sounds selfish, but I think mothers day really *is* a pretty delicate operation for churches. When I was growing up, mine would give each mother a corsage, but that got too expensive so they switched to just having all the moms stand up for a round of applause. But then they started having women who'd had three miscarriages or who regretted a past abortion bursting into tears during service, so they stopped that.

They tried handing out little trinket gifts to all the women as they came in, but some of the non-mothers (not realizing that this was an equal-opportunity recognition) would get confused and protest and hold up the line. So now they just leave a basket of trinkets out front and you can take on if you want one.

Last year's was a little pink notepad with a verse that says "a kindhearted woman gains respect, but men only gain wealth." lol!

I wish the LDS Church would adopt the "round of applause" model. Like a broadway play, the better or more important moms will receive longer ovations, maybe even standing ovations.
