Actually, if you really want long hair like that guy on the top you should find a decent hairdresser. You probably aren't getting the look you want because your hair is not properly coiffed.

You need a good stylist to get you to look like the first one. He's had it layered a bit and possibly thinned out as well.
Speaking from experience, you're going to want to grow it long enough to put it in a pony tail. Either that, or use some sort of bandana to keep it out of your face at times, it can get pretty annoying.
