    Teachers these days scare me

So in my daughter's HS Biology class today they were discussing genetics. Specifically genetic mutations to create food items that are more drought-resistant, insect-repellant, etc. Which of course turned into all the kids bashing insects and nobody cares about them anyway. Which you'd expect. But it turns out the teacher was saying the same thing. Not like that would be a good opportunity to discuss the food chain, the role insects play in ecosystems, etc.

So my daughter raiser her hand and asks him about bees as an example.

Daughter: What about bees? Do we need to think about what they do?
    Teacher: They make honey.
    Daughter: Anything else?
Teacher: They pollinate flower .... oh right, I guess I can see how that could be important.

    Yikes.

The scary thing is this is supposed to be the best high school in the state academically. Oh well, at least they produce good basketball players.

Disclaimer: This post is in no way meant to impugn or single out the teachers in the great state of Utah. There are crappy teachers everywhere. Also, I am not the wordsmith most of you are so I likely stated something in an uncouth, tactless way. My apologies in advance for any offense I may have caused. Parse away!

That was probably tactless. She should keep her mouth shut. Girls should be seen and not heard. Etc.

We need more like your daughter. People claim to be "Green" and "Holistic", but significantly miss the mark. This very mindset is behind the current requirement for ALL non-processed dairy products like cheese and yogurt to be made from PASTEURIZED milk and stored under sterile conditions! Where do they think the 'character' of the cheese comes from? It comes from the bacteria! Good lord people are stupid.

My son ran into the same thing here.

They had a big party in class celebrating the last Presidential Inauguration. During the celebration, my son's teacher said (as quoted by a then 7 year-old), "Finally they kicked that bum george Bush out of office!"

My son raised his hand, and said "He didn't 'kick him out of office'. His term was over and there was an election and a new president was picked. he can't serve a third term. That is the way our government works..."

The teacher was stupfied. She later conveyed the story to us at Parent Teacher Conference. I could not have been more proud. I was not a fan of Pres Bush late in his second term, and had been teaching him how the system works.

Also, this is the same teacher who gave an assignment to the kids to document dominant/recessive traits in them and all their cousins. Actually a pretty good assignment. But my kids don't have any cousins. So my daughter asked for an alternative assignment but the concept of no cousins is apparently so foreign around here that my wife had to call and talk to him. He actually asked "how is that possible?". Well, my husband is an only child and I have one sibling, who has no kids.

I guess my wife is sassy too.

            So . . . you have a husband AND a wife?

Just because you move to Utah, it doesn't mean you have adopt ALL of the cultural idiosyncrasies.

            Plus, you're doing it wrong.
If we disagree on something, it's because you're wrong.
