Taking my Daughter with me to DC

Reading FM's Philly thread has inspired me. You folks really know stuff.

I'm going to DC at the end of the month and will have my 16 year-old daughter with me. It's only my second time, she's never been. She is into history, etc., so I've got some of that stuff on my list of what to see and do. We're staying at a hotel right by Reagan Int.

I know she is interested in all of those Smithsonian/museum places along the mall - particularly the Museum of American History. I contacted one of the Utah senators months ago to see about getting a tour of the White House.

We are limited to just 3 days, one of them being Sunday, of true touristy activity. So tell me if certain places are only open weekdays and we'll be sure to hit that on Friday.

What are the places that are worth seeing and which aren't worth the time?

Any places near the airport with decent restaurant choices for meals? Or even places near the mall if we are spending the day there and then want to eat?

I'd love to hear any suggestions.

It would be my first meeting with a real life CUF poster - with you and UtahDan both there it would lay to rest a theory that this place is just one person with multiple personalities spending all day at the computer.

And as an added bonus it could end a family member's theory that messageboards are filled with either pedophiles or axe murderers lying in wait...

Funny you say that. Last fall, I took Mrs. JIC to a lunch with Solon, Tick and Tick's Wife. She commented afterwards, "Your imaginary internet friends are nice people"

I have a teen son who isn't the most outgoing social kid. I mean, he has friends, but he rarely asks to go to friends homes or has friends over to our house. He's just OK being on his own.

My wife has expressed her concerns to me on MULTIPLE occasions that she is worried for him, he doesn't seem to have any friends.

Last Saturday he was hurt in the eye at a party. The Dr. has said he needs to remain sedentary until the blood clot in his eye is re-absorbed, so he has been out of school all of this week.

Sunday night the gal who's party he was at came by. Tuesday he had a number of friends show up - a couple of boys and a bunch of girls. A group came again Wednesday, and again Thursday. They've brought cookies, candy, cupcakes, a Marie Calendar's pie, a home-made eye patch, sun glasses, a pile of notes from other kids at school, etc. He has gotten nearly 1000 texts since Saturday and has girls calling him during lunch at school (every day) to check on him and sing songs to him either from choir or that they made up.

Tuesday night after the first big group of friends left, my wife says to him "I'm so glad that your friends are real. I mean, you've always said you have friends. But I wasn't sure if they were real or if you were making them up!"

On our way Thursday - any last minute recommendations?

I have to admit - I kind of which the plane was headed to NOLA instead of DC. But at least we'll land in time to get to the hotel before the game starts.


Gabbers - if you and Dan don't have other stuff going on and are serious about maybe getting together, shoot me a PM. Our schedule is tight since there is so much to see and so little time to see it - but dinner does sound like fun.

I have seen most all the museums and tours mulitple times (my wife was not born in one of the 50 states, but in Columbia's District). Your daughter is at an age where she could understand and appreciate the Holocaust Museum. You can easily spend 4-8 hours there. Be prepared, it is an emotionally draining experience and most don't feel like doing much afterward. Personally, I think it is someone everyone should do at some point in their life. It is enlightening and overwhelming at the same time, but as mentioned several times during the tour, "we cannot forget".

Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't even thought of visiting the Holocaust museum. I think we'll add it to our list of places to visit, but keep it at the end of the day. I'm guessing I'll need to make sure we have time to process what we see.
