Looks like we're getting a cat

We think it's time for the kids to have a pet, and I will never scoop dog poop again, plus we don't really have a yard right now, so it's looking like it's a cat.

We went to my brother's house last weekend, and he had this fat cat that just laid around. The little boys freaked out about it (the one-year-old LOVES animals), and it was very calm and quiet, even with 9 (yep, 9) wild little boys running around.

So, if we find one with a calm disposition like that, should be able to avoid what my wife and I have both experienced in the past with cats, having them meowing at all hours of the night and early morning? We have a cat door in the door to the garage, so we'll keep the litter box and food out there.

Are there cats that will let us sleep in peace?

We had cats growing up and they only woke my parents up when they wanted out at night to do their duty. It sounds like your cat door will take care of that.

In general, I prefer cats to dogs. Cats don't seem to care if you ignore them.

We've tried a dog, currently have a cat... Cats are an infinitely easier pet than a dog, IMO.

The front of my car loves cats. Also, for some reason I have found that cats magnetically attract rocks and other debris.

I love cats and dogs equally... as long as they live anywhere but the inside of my place. Cats are low maintenance but they leave hair and puke everywhere. My mom's cat puked under the Christmas tree tonight as I was trying to enjoy some grilled salmon. Also, be forewarned that they only puke on carpet and upholstery.

I love cats and dogs equally... as long as they live anywhere but the inside of my place. Cats are low maintenance but they leave hair and puke everywhere. My mom's cat puked under the Christmas tree tonight as I was trying to enjoy some grilled salmon. Also, be forewarned that they only puke on carpet and upholstery.

Not sure why cats get the better rap for maintenance. I can tell within seconds if a cat lives in someones house...just walk into the garage and the garage stinks. It is disgusting. Plus, cat hair gets everywhere.

The one thing I like about cats is that they seem to be good sports about good natured teasing. For example, you can put tape around their paws or throw water at them in a playful manner but they will never complain.

Does anybody ever really have a pet cat? Based on my experience, cats simply roam around the neighborhood and stop in at a specific house for a meal and a drink every now and then. I guess that house is where the "owners" live.

I guess by low maintenance I mean they don't require training or attention. If they want to be pet they will seek you out. They are basically born potty trained. In the cats world, people never "own" them, they just allow people to live around them.

They are not low maintenance in that you have to cover the smell (in their defense, I think dogs smell just as much), clean up the hair, and deal with the puke.

We spend about $75 a month to get our cat groomed; I can all but guarantee you'd never know we have a house cat until you actually saw it.

We stopped off in Vegas on our way back from thanksgiving. We arrive at our relatives house and in th midst of our conversation, I notice a food and water dish in the kitchen floor. My wifes aunt explains that a cat started hanging out at their house and now lives there.
