I am pretty sure I know what they are.

Edit: Yeah, google shows I was right. I have some friends with several hundred of these.

You've listed the people that "should know" and their common thread is farming/ranching. The people who "might know," have had farming/ranching in their past. Lebowski knows people who have several hundred, and he's from Provo.

I think I know, but I wouldn't be so low to ruin it for you.

                  Duh.

                  Those are trees.

Not sure what the white things in front of the trees are, though.

I am waffling between a really organized scout-o-rama or something from the X-files. I do have a semi-serious guess, but I am waiting with baited breath for the real answer. Is it something that will spoil our desire for thanksgiving dinner or make us thankful we don't live on a farm?

I just reviewed Hostile's Ellis Island thread, and I dont see anything that would lead me to think he might know. But I wouldn't exclude him either--depends upon where in Utah he's from.

Clackamas is on the right track.

I am puzzled how Lebowski knows, but I'm sure he does know.

Given the list of people who should know what these devices are, I would guess they having something to do with converting bullshit into usable energy.

I am fairly certain that I know what those are.

I've spent some time traveling the back roads of Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. My parents are both from farming communities in SE Idaho. Also, my BIL has worked on several cattle ranches - Ellison ranch in NV, King ranch in TX, and currently managing the Hoodoo ranch in WY.
