    Decroded dead stuff

I think we have something dead in ceiling/floor.
A few months ago the cats started wigging out about something that was in the wall. We could hear some scratching inside. Something was in there.
This was a wall in the dining room. A bit later, we started to have a very odd odor in the bedroom above the dining room.
This past weekend it finally started to warm up and the odor is getting worse.
Worse still, I can now smell it in other areas of the upstairs.
It seems clear that something died in the space between the floor/ceiling.
Tomorrow I'm going to call the exterminator (we have a termite/pest contract) and it looks like they handle mice/rats/squirrels/raccoons.

I'm hoping that the pest folks will handle this. I'm sure they will try to figure out where the animals entered and do whatever they do to prevent more from entering. But I'm not sure they will remove the corpse. Anyone had this little adventure? How do I find the corpse w/o ripping apart my house? Or do I just wait for it to decay?

We had something die in our walls in the home I grew up in. It smelled horrible for a couple of weeks and then it was all over.

      Mystery solved.

Our oldest cat, Lexington, kept trying to get my wife's attention today. That usually means they are out of food. She was in our bedroom so she headed down the hall towards the stairs to fill up the food bowl in the garage. But, as soon as my wife left the bedroom, she booked into the spare bedroom, where the dead thing was. Lexington stood in the room, looking at the open closet door and meowing loudly. My wife kept trying to get her to come out to the food, but Lexington persisted. Intrigued, my wife goes in and the cat leads her into the closet. Turns out, upon closer inspection, there was a box buried in the corner that was wet. I had left the closet door open last night when I was trying to see what was soooo stinky. Lexington was able to do a little inspecting on her own.

So, I get home today and take a look-see. We had put some food storage in that spare bedroom closet and a case of peeled tomatoes had gotten a case of the runs. Good Lord it smelled. Wet droopy mold on the carpet. Luckily we put in the carpet bad with a pet barrier when we moved in, so I just had to cut out the carpet in the corner.
It was gross, but it beats a rotting raccoon.

Well done little Lexington, well done.
      I intend to live forever.
      So far, so good.

Mummification by dessication is painless and odorless, when complete.
