    First time mobile phone purchase

I have never owned a cell phone. Well, I do have one of those pay as you go phones so I can call my wife when I am on a business trip. I probably should get one for work related stuff. The pruchase will come out of my research budget. I can't imagine I will use it for anything more than basic stuff like phone calls and email (mostly email). I don't connect to a Microsoft exchange server. All of my email is on an IMAP server. Recommendations? What should I get?

Some information the summarizes my computing preferences:
    1. I spend about 95% of my computing time on Linux machines. The other 5% is split between Solaris and Windows.

    2. I still us mutt as my email client:

    3. I do all my writing with a combination of LaTeX (referee reports, class notes, papers) and emacs org-mode (short stuff, Sunday lesson notes, etc).

    4. I have a macbook pro laptop. I don't really like it. I gave it to my wife.

I was going to make a joke about the Matrix, but I don't remember the guys name that looks at the coding and sees hot girls. Just think how funny it would have been!

I am pretty sure that one doesn't do email.

Sounds like you want an android phone. Perhaps an EVO or the new Droid?

Probably makes sense given the general ability of apple products to annoy me.

I don't know much about OSs, but I understand that Android runs on a modified version of linux.

                      This.

If you root your phone you can connect your phone to your computer and manage it via a shell. You will feel right at home.

                        That's sounds nice.

Should I be indifferent between an EVO and a Droid?

I don't own either, but from what I understand the EVO is probably the better choice. 4G speed would be awesome. There is a new Samsung 4G phone that looks good as well.

Okay. I'll be helpful. If all you want is email and phone, then just get an entry level Blackberry. It will meet your needs and be much cheaper than a droid or iphone. Your email client and server will be irrelevant.

Thanks, YOhio. Money is not much of an issue since the expenditure comes out of my research budget and I spent less 10% of my budget last year. I am actually kind of looking for ways to spend my research money (I don't want it taken away). But if the blackberry has a better email interface then I probably should get that.
