Recommendations for a pet?

    Recommendations for a pet?

    My 6-year-old has been asking us about getting a Nintendo DS for awhile. Both my wife and I are pretty opposed to that, despite the fact that some of his friends have them. (Sidebar: why does a 6YO kid really need a DS?) Anyway, my wife came up with a fantastic new idea for a Christmas present instead of a portable machine to isolate him from the rest of humanity when he's still trying to learn how to spell--a pet.

    To my dismay, we have already had a cat for over 3 years. We are not in a position to get a dog right now but will probably get one down the road. They went to the pet store yesterday to check out the options and found the following:

    -Snake
    -Tree frog
    -Fish
    -Turtles (land or water)
    -Rat
    -Guinea Pig
    -Rabbit
    -Parakeet
    -Iguana
    -Water lizard
    -and a few others that I can't remember right now

    He really wants a baby elephant or a monkey, but I don't know if I can swing either of those. Have you had any pets besides dogs or cats, and what recommendations or advice do you have?

          This. You can get those pet games - Nintendo dogs, Nintendo cats, etc. - for the DS and the kid should be satisfied. It worked with our youngest when she was 6 and she still loves to play the games because they are her pets.

                          My 4 year old is begging for a DS since her 5 year old cousin has one. Half the kids in primary her age have them.

                          I'd get your kid a DS.

                                  The Puffy Check are turning 6 soon. My son wants a DS. I would much rather he get a DS than an animal. He has played with his cousins and really enjoys it.

                                  Kids get bored quickly with the daily maintenance of household pets. Pretty soon, the pet belongs to Mom.

                                  A DS is a fantastic bit of leverage for behavior modification. Right now, my son does not want to risk video game time, so he conforms. If I told him he couldn't play with a hamster for a few days if he misbehaves, not going to have the same impact.

                                              I wouldn't get him a DS this year. A couple months later he'll just want a 3DS.
