  • Help a gal out--How do you pronounce Yreka?

I've got to lead a meeting tomorrow morning discussing the Yreka School District in CA. So as not to look a fool, is it "why-REE-ka?"

    TIA

    Why not like "Eureka"?

I can't read phonetic spellings, but this might help you if you can. Looks like you are right.

        Yreka (pronounced /waɪˈriːkə/ "wye-REE-ka")

          Yes and yes.

Its 100 miles north of here. And while it is a fairly ugly town with little industry and few redeeming values, they do have a nice, convenient Walmart store just off the freeway and they also host a nice little century bike ride every September, possibly even this weekend.

It beats the heck out of Alturas.

By the way, there's a bakery in Yreka called the "Yreka Bakery". It's spelled the same backwards and forwards. I always thought that was interesting.
