Anyone enjoy W hotels?

I stayed at my first one the last few nights and I didn't like it. I just wanted to get the starwood points and this one's location was ideal. When I walked in, it felt more like a club than a welcoming hotel. It just reeked of LA doucheyness. I wasn't a big fan of all the purples and pinks. All the flashing lights in the elevator almost gave me a seizure and the room was a little too modern for me.

I guess I'm getting old, but I prefer either a homey type hotel, or if in a big city, an historic, old-world one. Perhaps not all Ws are like this one, but I think I'll stick to a Westin or Sheraton in the future.

I've never stayed in one, but I have been in a few for conferences or just meeting people in the lobby. I am with you. They always seem like they are trying too hard to be cool.

More often than not I will choose a Sheraton or Westin over a W. In some cities though, a Sheraton will be the equivalent of a budget 8 and I will choose a W.

I've never stayed in one but I've seen them since other co-travelers have stayed in them. Specifically I've been in the W in Seattle. It's very modern and appeals to a certain group of people to which I don't belong.

When traveling, I typically stay at a Marriott brand hotel since that is where my points are located. Marriotts are decent for the most part, and if I forget to bring my BOM along I know there is one in the nightstand waiting for me.

Once, when going to visit relatives in Portland, my wife booked us into here:

She saw it in some magazine or other and the article touted it as one of the top new boutique hotels in America. Turns out it's mainly a crash pad for those who imbibe too much at the attached, uber hip (5 years ago) Doug Fir. The techno music at three in the afternoon sealed the deal for her and I had to call my relatives and see if we could stay with them. I've always wondered what we would have seen on the sheets, walls, ceiling etc. if we'd hit them with a black light, 20/20 style.
