Anyone ever bought a car off eBay?

I'm looking for tips, success stories, how-to advice, and warnings. (I am feeble minded and can be talked into, and out of, anything.)

I would start with not doing it outside of your state.

Yes, when I was much younger and much stupider. Buyer beware. I wouldn't do it again.

I've bought one car from Ebay and two others long distance - one from a private party through cars.com and one through an enthusiast messageboard.

The key is the same as for buying any used car - get maint/service records and verify the vehicle history. Remember that the car will never look quite as good as the photos. Also, leave yourself an exit strategy if you can. That means going to examine the car before the sale or having the seller take it in for a pre-purchase inspection (may not be possible with an auction).

I did it once. It turned out to be an okay decision, but I probably wouldn't do it again.

I had the seller take the vehicle to a dealership to do an inspection, and I think most ebay sellers expect the same from buyers. What I did wrong was just let the seller choose the inspection place. If the car had any major problems, I wonder if they would have told me.

My brother-in-law purchased a used Mercedes off of eBay and it was a perfectly maintained, beautiful car. They haven't had any issues.

What kind of a deal would you have to get to make it worth to travel for a car?

The financial outlay would be significant, hotel, airfare, food, time from work, miles on vehicle.

The three times I've traveled to buy a car it has been about availability. You don't buy a Toyota Camry on Ebay.
