Asking for the future father-in-law's permission for marriage

Is it just a formality? Or should it be an actual approval process? If a young man isn't confident in getting a yes from his bride-to-be's father, he probably either skips that step or does it more to just inform the future FIL that he's proceeding with or without the approval. I have daughters and will be faced with this in about 12 years or so. It's probably the responsibility of the girl's parents to be clear with their warnings/disapprovals before the point of him asking for permission.

I didn't realize people really did that anymore -- at least in the US.

I think of it as asking for his blessing rather than permission. It's not like I wouldn't have married her just because I didn't get his "permission."

When I had "the talk" with my future FiL, it was a pretty good discussion that lasted for about 45 minutes. I remember that he talked about Star Trek a lot (he's a pretty big Trekkie) and applied several episodes he had recently seen to important eternal truths.

My SIL asked me for permission to marry my daughter. I don't think my reply mattered in the least though

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Do they live in Vermont or Iowa? Creepy, but if you're okay with it.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

SIL = son-in-law, took me a minute, I'm alittle dense today.

They were living down by you, but they've sinced moved back to Zion. Much to my wife's relief. The grandson is only a mile away

Manute Bol gave his in-laws to be 80 cows. Take that Mahana.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I would hope that both of my futer Son-in-laws would ask for my blessing.

I think it shows respect for the future in-laws which is a good thing in my book.

And I would never say no. I would take it as an opportunity to let the young man know how much my daughter means to me. How much her happiness is important to me. And how important her education has always been to her.

I plan on this happening over a round of golf or a day of fly fishing. Either way...he is paying.

I asked. This was 5 years ago. I think my FIL appreciated it. I did it more out of respect than need.

I asked. My FIL said he would kill me if I ever hurt his girls. He was serious.

I will definitely be asking my future FIL, though his response isn't particularly important (nor will my asking be particularly surprising, as we've dated for >4 years).

I asked. My FIL never directly responded to the request though.

It doesn't matter though, since I'm clearly the favorite in-law. I think I may even be more liked than my wife.
