New PC with Ubuntu (Linux) - Wow!

I've long suffered with Micro$oft PCs. I was particularly weary with the changes to the GUI every time they came out with a new rendition of the OS or Office. I loathe the 2007 GUI. And I just couldn't ever persuade myself enough to switch to Mac.

Well a couple of weeks ago, the motherboard on my 3 year old PC went caput. At the time I didn't know what the problem was, but figured to go ahead and get a new PC anyway, but this time I ordered all the parts on my own and built my own PC for the first time. By that time, I figured out what was wrong with my old PC, ordered a new motherboard, and voila, I had my old PC back. Since my old PC was working fine again, I decided I would use the new one I just built to experiment with Linux OS.

I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH LINUX!

If you are something of a power PC user or have a fair amount of ingenuity when it comes to computers, and you are not fond of continuing down the path of M$ or Apple, jump right in. I was very surprised at the ease of installation, and the quality and alternatives of Linux based software and apps. Just about anything you would use on M$, there is a quality substitute in the Linux world, and it's all free... Not to mention WINE, which if you can't give up your Windows-based app just yet, will probably allow you to run it on a Linux system. I downloaded a packaged Linux set up and it was up and running on my system in about 10 minutes, and I didn't need any specialized knowledge to get it working.

Browser, email, office docs, pdfs, disk partitioning, personal financial app, image editing, media players, and the list goes on and on. Free support and the user forums are very helpful.

I anticipate that I will take my time migrating from my old Windows-based set up, but in short order, I will be mostly free from Windows, and I don't see why I would ever go back.

Uncle Ted is very proud of you. Of course, real men run PC-BSD/FreeBSD but this is a great first step. Just ask Space Ghost.

I've been tempted off and on to switch to Linux. I had been a Unix-only user until 1998 when I switched to a company that forced me to use Microsoft stuff.

But now that I have my wife trained to do the few computer things that she does using a Windows PC, I'm not sure I could handle trying to teach her a new system.

It would be kind of nice to have a computer that doesn't need 600 MB of memory to do nothing, which is what Vista uses.

For those that have no clue what I am talking about:

"Ubuntu!": Team chemistry has been a major theme in training camp, with the Celtics packing up for a European tour and spending plenty of quality time with each other in Rome and London. And the team adopted the African term "Ubuntu" (which roughly translates to "I am because we are") as a rallying cry for team unity. Doc Rivers had his rookies make a presentation to the team about the term before they left for Europe, and the message apparently stuck. The team closes all huddles with the phrase...."

For what I do it comes very close. Of course some of the things I do a home user would never touch. If I was just doing the average surf the net/Office type stuff Ubuntu would probably be fine.

The biggest problem with linux for me is installing programs. The average person wants to download, click, and then the program installs automatically. All the compilers and install tools for linux are confusing for the average user.

Whatever so called "operating system" that the Microsoft Office suite normally runs on must be a POS.

For most typical home-use the operating system could really be replaced with a browser (with a minimal OS) that completely boots in about five seconds:
