Life is too short to waste it driving a boring car

I put in my time with cars as mere transportation, driving what I could afford, but managed to get a few interesting cars along the way too, like a 240-Z and my first car, a Pontiac Tempest with Chevy 327 engine and Muncie 4-speed.

Now that I can buy what I want, it's got to be a convertible. Preferably red.

I don't understand why SUV's are so popular. You can't fit as much inside one as in a comparable sized minivan and most of them aren't even as comfortable. When I'm behind an SUV, my eyes see this:

But my mind sees this:


And I get stuck behind an awful lot of them because there are so many of them around.

A non-boring car doesn't necessarily have to be exciting, it can be fun or interesting too.

I've had the Mustang for nearly five years now, and it's fun. A total pleasure to drive when the weather cooperates, which it does most of the time around here. I've been known to keep the top down for five or six months at a time, never raising it until it starts raining in the area. I've even learned how to wash it without putting the top up, if it hasn't gotten too dirty.


Anybody else prefer interesting cars to the boring ones?

I drive a boring (but practical) car. I'm dying to get out of it, but its paid for and its got relatively low miles (50k), so I can't bring myself to do it. But I really want something exciting to drive, since I'm in my car at least an hour a day (not too much, but enough to get bored with my current ride).

I know, I know, its not only a GM, its a Pontiac. I can't believe myself either. But the thing is, this car has over 400 hp in a 6.2L V-8 it shares with the Corvette. And the reviews are incredibly positive. And its (relatively) CHEAP! Plus, add to it the fact that Pontiac is dead, and these things can be had for a song. Now if I could only justify the purchase after recently paying off my super boring car....

Upon closer inspection, the GXP is about $35,000 with less than 10k miles. However, there's also a GT version that has a 6.0L V8 and 356 hp that you can find for between 8 to 10k less. Since there's no pontiac at all anymore, I'm thinking you're on your own for financing my friend.

one of our family's good friends (and my young men's adviser all the way through) just got an itch and bought one of these:






it is an incredible car. beats the porsche 911 turbo (which is what he'd been looking at for the last little while) in just about every category and costs $40k less. it's such great performance in a sleek, understated package. if anyone has ~$80k floating around and is on the market for a legitimate supercar, get one of these.

This would be my position too. I had a VW Passat a while back and found it very comfortable and a lot faster than necessary, but unless I'm commuting a ton I don't require anything more than a rust bucket.

For an '85 Countach, it's $55-65K, depending on the condition. For an '88 Countach, it starts at $75K.

This pretty much sums up my view as well. Also, it's amazing how relative comfort is. The car I drive would probably be a step down for most CUFfers (heck it would be a step down for most of the support staff at my firm) but compared to the car I drove for the last 10 years, it is major fancy. Power locks, power windows, automatic. I'm rollin' big time these days.

Glad to see you youngsters feeling that way. I am still driving my 2002 Avalon with 120,000 miles on it and a bunch of dents. I have thought to myself it is because I am old and don't care so much anymore. Maybe it is actually because I think young.
