    My nephew is the man

My nephew is a senior in HS an excellent basketball player and much like his dad and uncle probably thinks he is a pretty big deal...until he heads to Provo next year and learns like I did there are hundreds of other kids who were good HS ballplayers. He just sent me some picture from his prom, I love his pimp tux and as you can tell he is obviously quite happy. I'm pretty sure he is a good kid, however I have to admit this looks like the kind of guy who has a hotel key in his pocket and keg in his trunk.

Exactly what I thought. You go all out on an outfit like that and you decide that you are going to wear your black church shoes?

Art, send your nephew shopping with HFNW to see how it is done.

I see he already has his hands in his pockets, practicing his post slow dance walk away. Tell him you used to trip on stones.

I will agree the shoes were a bit disappointing. I'm sure he blesses the sacrament most weeks in a pair of black Nikes so he doesn't have much footwear expereince outside of sneakers (are athletic shoes still called sneakers?). Though he me not have much of an eye for zapatos, I was pleased he has the Vandelay eye for female talent. The smiley is to protect the innocent, but she is a very very cute girl.

That combo is clash-o-riffic. I always liked to asked for a piece of the dress fabric in advance so as to coordinate my vest/tie combos with my date's outfit.

EDIT: Upon closer inspection, it appears that she might have some pink 'bedazzling' on her red dress. If so, then an argument (a weak one, anyway) can be made for non-clash. He'd have a much stronger case if he'd found a vest that incorporated any amount of red, however.

This is begging for a prom picture thread. I am pretty sure I had bleached hair in one of them with a Mandarin collar shirt and tuxedo.

That's not a red dress, silly. I think his vest is the exact shade of her dress, but since it's candy-pin-striped, it comes across lighter from a distance.

It is funny you mention that, I had been planning to scan an old prom picture and start that thread for awhile. I was, and am still worried, I would be the only one to post something that embarrassing though. About a month ago my kids found my senior prom picture and started mocking me for the over the collar hair (with no hint of gray), going with a girl who wasn't dressed very modestly and had terrible 80's eyeliner. The other thing it reminded me of was how popularity effects who you think is good looking or not in HS. I took a popular cheerleader, but in retrospect there were much cuter girls that weren't in the "in-crowd" I would have much rather gone with.

EDIT: Babs, was there any chiffon on you dress? Just a wild guess

Regardless, it cannot go unpunished that Donut asked for a fabric swatch in order to coordinate his outfit with his date's dress. We're talking about high school here.

I agree, it's not red. But I would need further evidence to be convinced that it's the same shade as his vest. I don't think it's close.

come, on...it's donut! This is hardly surprising.

But as far as the above ensemble goes, the color-coordination is pretty far down on the list of creative liberties taken.

I don't know. I'm still stuck on why he's pairing a morning coat with an evening dress.

Initially I thought you were taking a thinly-veiled, homoerotic swipe at me (you being the guy that burns out, literally, in downtown LA driving a creme colored Pontiac Firebird).

However, after giving it more though, your post makes me very happy. Why? Because it is clear that yet another person has been trained in how to wear slacks. You saw the problem on your own.

btw, I don't fault Art Vandelay's nephew since it is a rentals, although technically you should just rent flat-front and be done with it. But my guess is that white tuxes don't come in flat front. Just a hunch. I actually applaud his nephew for having panache and for taking a cute girl to the prom (I trust Art Vandelay's judgment on this aspect).

At this point, it seems unnecessary to speak out against the evils of pleats, lengthy sleeves or too much pant break on this message board (we won't get into a discussion of waistcoats). These pictures do all the talking.

In fact, I dub that entire rental ensemble the "Zoot Suit Maitre d'" and in doing so, I wish Nephew and his Heina well and hope they had fun at the Quinceañera.
