    Provo Center St. Roundabout Photo

If anyone has a high-quality photo of the Center St. roundabout in Provo that they built by Seven Peaks right before the Olympics, would you please be kind enough to post it in this thread? Or if anyone goes by there and could take a photo, I would be grateful.

I'm currently working with Hartsville's mayor to propose a roundabout on a major street in town that's right by our campus and has a rush minute in the morning and the afternoon when the office workers go to and leave Sonoco. It's also on the main drag that runs through our campus and right by the admissions office, and we could put a big beautiful "Coker College" sign in the middle of the roundabout. We just have to convince the college president to give up a corner of unused land. Having a photo of the Center St one, in its finished format will aid us. I looked online and I can only find ones of it under construction.

    Thanks, if you have anything.

    Here you go:

Click on the Provo link. The photos don't show all of the shrubs, flowers, etc. currently in the middle, but there are quite a few other photos. I know the guy that built this website and he designs roundabouts for a living.

This is beautiful. The president will be speechless. You guys can basically start planning that Coker roundabout now.

Roundabouts are great in theory. In reality, nobody knows how to use them. Usually at a roundabout, one street is more "major" than the other and the cars on the major street, just blow right throught the roundabout ignoring the yield sign and causing the cars on the minor street to wait for a reasonable human to yield for them. It is a constant struggle at our roundabout here in Lehi.

The traffic engineers I work with are not big fans of roundabouts. They fear change for many of the reasons that Livecoug mentioned.

We are putting one in on a State Highway in a resort area (Mammoth Lakes). I fully expect it to be a cluster if it actually ever goes in.

they only have to yield to traffic already in the roundabout so if there's nobody there then that's what they should do, keep traffic flowing.

You are correct though in that a roundabout isn't always the best solution. Ideally you would have almost equal amounts of traffic coming from all entrances. If one entrance has particularly heavy traffic and the entrance to which it would yield is really light then you'll have imbalances. Good engineers should recognize this and plan an appropriate intersection, given the traffic patterns.

You only yield to traffic already entering or in the round about. That is what is suppose to make the traffic flow easier, yes? If cars just took turns, that would be a nightmare. Maybe I am one of the ones you are talking about that don't know how to use a roundabout.

ROundabouts are wonderful. The only reason they dont work here is becasue most peopel are unfamiliar with them. They work fabulously well in Europe in almost every instance I have seen and driven in. I think they shoudl be encouraged as much as possible.
                      PLesa excuse the tpyos.

I don't think so. Both streets have Yield signs. If people on the major street never yield to cars on the minor street, the minor street cars will NEVER get to cross the street. This happens ALL the time in the Lehi roundabout. A car is waiting to enter the traffic circle from the minor street and car after car after car on the major street just blow through. That can't be the point of a traffic circle.

Might as well have a stop sign then. That logically doesn't work in my mind.

Then how do minor street cars get through if no major street cars yield for them? Trust me, it's a huge issue here. Waiting for a major street car to yield can take forever.

Also, way different than stop signs. If there are no minor cars at the intersection, by all means, blow through.

Coach is right. You only have to yield to the cars already in the roundabout. I've never been through the one you're talking about, but it sounds like the engineers shouldn't have put a roundabout in that intersection.
                              Not that, sickos.
