Something I don't get

There was a brief discussion on Cougarboard someone asking about things to do in Scottsdale, AZ, and I responded with the fact that unless you enjoy clubbing and/or fine dining, there's really not much else to do.

So others say that Fashion Square as opposed to Old Town Scottsdale is great, which lead to another thought....why do people on their vacations go out of their way to go Malls? That's what Fashion Square is...it's a big Mall.

It seems like no matter where people go on vacation they inevitably end up hitting a few various local malls. Unless there's a specific store there where they don't live, I've never understood the fascination with hearing..."We hit Fashion Square!" or "We hit The Gateway!" or....fill in the blank MALL here no matter where you live.

Why in the hell do people go to Malls on their vacations? Can't you do that at home? LOL. I'd rather spend my vacation doing things at the destination I'm hitting that they DON'T have back home, but instead people waste their time at the Mall on vacations all the time and then act as if it was a big stress reliever.

I can't ever remember jonzing to hit the Mall while on vacation when it's something I can do back home.

I'm with you. I avoid the mall near my home. The last thinkg I want to do is go to a mall somehwere else. Blecchh.

Thats funny when we went to the BYU vs UofA game in Tucson we hit up the mall down there and we started making fun of ourselves for doing it.

I live in Hartsville, SC so when we see a mall we go.......nothing like the sticks to make you glad they have the internet on computers these days.

My in-laws are the kings of lousy vacations. I wonder if this is a Utah thing?

If you are from Utah and vacation in Vegas or SoCal or whatever, you are going to come across a LOT of stores that are not in Utah. So in one sense, I get why they do it.

However, I do not like wasting my vacation shopping for things I can get at home. So in the case of my Utah in-laws, yes....as a hypo: if they come to visit us and go to South Coast Plaza, they can go to the Diesel store for jeans. There is no Diesel store in Utah. So I get that. BUT....you can get Diesel jeans in Utah, so why bother going to the store at South Coast Plaza? If you are going to go shopping, at least buy stuff you can't get at home.

Other things my in-laws do on their vacations: sleep late and don't get out the door until about 11AM every morning; hang out at their hotel and swim in the pool; go back to their hotel room after dinner to watch an in-room movie; or, go to a movie theater after dinner to watch a movie; eat at national chains like Olive Garden, TGIFriday's, Chiles, or Mimis Cafe.

My wife once asked if I would be willing to go on a Euro trip with her parents...like London or Paris. After I calmly and clearly stated my position and my reasons, I don't think she ever brought that idea up again.

I rarely go to the mall when I'm home. There is no reason to go to a mall on vacation.

I take that back. The Brea Mall on Imperial Highway just off the 57 freeway. That place is bitchin'.

I agree though, this makes little sense to me. There is a shoe outlet where I frequently pick up a new pair of dress shoes at our yearly vacation spot but no shopping otherwise. Now I have never been to Gateway (been a few years since I've been to SLC) so I could see my self going there just to see it as part of being downtown since I once lived there and changes are interesting. I can also see it if you are visiting Rodeo Drive or Manhattan. Stores there you don't have at home.

I guess it just gives people something to do who are not otherwise interested in what is going on at the destination. Also, really, this is not a male behavior we are talking about in the main, I don't think.

Apparently I dodged a bullet. I met some friends for lunch today in Newport Beach and we almost went to Fashion Island. Fortunately we went elsewhere so I can say I didn't go to the mall.

I know a women who did Med cruise and all she wanted to do in Italy was find a Lladro store. Blew my mind. Everywhere she goes, she is 100% focused on shopping. Couldn't care less about scenic attractions, historical sites, etc.

I know another guy who owns a houseboat share at Lake Powell. Last summer, he told me that they always park it a few miles from the Bullfrog marina so that his wife and her friend can go shopping every day. Stunned, I asked "Shopping where?". He answered, "At the gift shop at Bullfrog or over at Hall's Crossing." Both gift shops are about the size of your average Quick Mart convenience store.
