Of the top 100 places I'd choose to live, I think Austin is the only Texas city that would make the cut -- assuming of course, that I wouldn't slit my wrists after having listened to the "Heart of Texas" for the millionth time.

An excellent classification of the strange part of Austin I was hinting at but couldn't put my finger on.

Talking about the differences between TX major cities - I'll point out again the huge cultural difference between Dallas and Fort Worth. They may as well be on different sides of the continent...

I am honestly not a fan of Dallas at all or (gasp!) Austin either. Nothing against Austin (plenty against Dallas) but they aren't my type of city. Houston and I get along very, very well. Even in the summer.

What part of town do you live in? I have a sister (a cursing RS President) who's looking to relocate there. Her husband would work at GE's new oil/gas/energy facility at Clay Road and Beltway 8. She'd like to live somewhere between there and the temple - a big residential quadrant between Jersey Village and the Willowbrook Mall is where she's targeting her search. Housing prices appear to be reasonable, and schools look to at least be decent. Is that a horrible choice?

It really depends, since it is such a big area, but generally there are nice places to live up there. Look for the master planned communities and you'll be fine - ad hoc neighborhoods of whatever stripe in Houston are hit or miss. Large stake centered up there, as you'd expect. Also, a Costo and an REI across the freeway from the mall.

Why isn't Wyoming included in the Mountain West? The people there do have their regional differences, like any other place, but it's too akin to places like Montana and Idaho to carve out.

(I mean all of that as a complement. Well, most of it.)

It really depends, since it is such a big area, but generally there are nice places to live up there. Look for the master planned communities and you'll be fine - ad hoc neighborhoods of whatever stripe in Houston are hit or miss. Large stake centered up there, as you'd expect. And the planned community advice is good for all of Texas. Texans don't generally like zoning. So if you don't want chickens or goats in your neighbors yard, or a factory across the street from your elementary school, you need to stick with the planned comunity.

Originally it was meant as a nod/insult/homage to our WY residents. Also, my grandma was from Jackson Hole, so to me it was always "different" when she described it.

Agreed. For my part, I consider Houston to be a Southern city, but not part of the Deep South by any measure. Houston is not a western or midwestern city, that much is certain. We also have (in my view) much more in common with New Orleans and Atlanta, in terms of attitude and culture, than with Dallas. People who like Houston typically do not like Dallas and vice-versa. There is a food and people tie to New Orleans and Louisiana generally by all accounts. You can get LSU gear here as easily as UT gear, and you see about as much. When the Saints won the Super Bowl, it was not a small deal to many people here as well.

Dallas is a Texas city. It is not really midwestern or western, and it sure ain't southern. I hate Dallas, by the way.

San Antonio and parts west are Western.

The different characteristics of the four major cities in Texas are quite astounding, to tell you the truth.

Wuap's map is correct. Texas is not anything close to Miss, Ala and SC in terms of "south", but there are common links such as the pride we feel to be from Texas/the South and the accompanying joy that we aren't from California or, God help us, Oklahoma.

I don't hate Houston. It's Texas. But Houston is an overcrowded, smelly, hot, bug infested place I never want to visit.

Florida was deep south, until the New Yorkers and Cubans took over. There are still pockets of the confederacy though, mostly in the panhandle. I've known a few people from that area and they are as redneck/hillbilly/southern drawl as you'll find anywhere.

So deep south = edneck/hillbilly/southern drawl.
