  • Had the standard prom lecture

    in high school.

The day before the dance AP English teacher told us all the evils of alcohol and pleather backseats and told us not to do anything we'd regret later in life.

Looking back at the pictures I only wish she'd warned us of the dangers of teal taffeta, hot pink blush, and Rave hairspray!

My HS Chemistry teacher was a real hippie (VW van, long straight hair, hemp-like clothing, an unempolyed husband who sat all day in the public library reading back issues of Rolling Stone, etc) told us all before graduation, "I know you are all going to go get drunk and high, just don't drive and use birth control". This was an AP chemistry class, most of the students were hurrying home from graduation to catch "Miami Vice" or having impure thoughts watching "Small Wonder", so the advice seemed strange to say the least.

Prom for me was awesome. My uncle let me borrow is brand new, well 10,000 miles new, Chevy Impala SuperSport. It was a really, really nice car.

I was able to go places I had never been when I drove the Volkswagon.

I would think someone who hung out there would have a hard time getting a teaching job.

Her husband was the ne'er-do-well, not my teacher. I really liked my teacher, she was a Berkeley grad and a pleasant change of pace for my small redneck town. I have no idea what brought her there, but my guess is lots of open space and good weather for cultivating your own cannabis garden.

          Oops, just got your joke...

Yeah, the English teacher was pretty liberal, too. She was always undermining religion and republicans and rednecks and lost of other R words. I remember her somehow reading sex into all the imagery in every chapter of every book we ever read, so it was kind of surprising when she took the "keep your pants on" angle re: prom.

Mostly I just remember it being exceedingly awkward as we all sat there thinking, "Wait, isn't this what we have parents for??"

I'm not sure if this is the case everywhere, but around here prom dresses [reportedly] cost more and [obviously] cover less. I just saw the FB pics of one of my former priests. Hopefully his date's dress was so comfortable (being breathable and all) she made sure to keep it on the whole night.

What prompts a mother to think purchasing something like this for a 17 or 18 YO girl is a good idea?

Perhaps she's really looking forward to being a grandmother?

To make you, and me for posting it, feel better I will go with 18. The one on the left is definitely 18 and should be preparing to get ready for his mission. Perhaps, he has been studying the Old Testament a little too much recently.

Sorry, Bishop, but based purely on the photo, the odds are slim to none.

I only need a quick glance at these photos to know that the two kids are not chaste.

I agree with RedSox's assessment. I didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of snagging a date with a chick that dressed like that while I was in high school (heck, I didn't in college either). If I could have had a date with a chick that dressed like that, there is no way I could have resisted whatever other temptations she was willing to proffer.
