Cold Sores

So I have something strange forming on my lip, strange enough that it has me on the internet at 5am trying to figure out what it might be.

It started yesterday and almost felt like a small allergic reaction was occurring on my lip. Since yesterday it has grown into what looks like a cluster of really tiny blisters that are kind of puffing out from my lip.

Is this how you would describe the onset of cold sore? Also, is it strange to get your first one at 30?

I've gotten bad cold sores since I was a teenager. I'm plastering chapstick on all the time so I don't get them.

What you described is a typical cold sore. Tingling followed by blisters. Until the blistering goes down, they are painful.

The worst part is they are ugly and they make you feel unclean, like you have leprosy or something.

It is a virus, so you can catch it anytime in your life and it is always with you. From what I understand, it goes dormant back in your spin and comes back in times of stress.

I've found the important thing to prevent and outbreak is to get enough sleep and if you have to be out in the sun, splash on a ton of chap stick. They seem to come when my lips overheat. I believe this is why they are also called Fever Blisters.

Herpesvirus is something you usually catch as a small child (most often from your parents). When you initially catch it the symptoms are normally pretty mild flu like syndromes. The virus never really goes away and hides in nerves and comes out when you have lowered immune state or stress or even excess sun exposure. Another example of a herpes virus that you never really shake is chickenpox. It goes dormant in a nerve them comes out as shingles when you get older.

Long story short you probably have a cold sore and no you didn't just catch it.

Yes, that sounds like a cold sore. Always carry a medicated blistex and use generously.

I'll echo what has been said, it sounds like cold sores or fever blisters. Mine seem to show up after I've been sick or been under alot of stress. Also, as I've gotten older they don't seem as severe.

I don't get cold sores, but I do get cankers. Have had them so bad in the back of my throat that it felt like bad strep throat. But at least they are all in the mouth so no one can see what is going on. My condolences.

I haven't had a cold sore in a few years now, but I used to used this stuff called Zilactin. When I would first start getting the tingle that seemed to precede the outbreak, I'd dab that stuff on. It burns like hell but I always appreciated that because it made me feel like it was working. Who knows, maybe it was all in my mind.

I believe topical acyclovir will shorten duration.

family friend who is an MD gave me some Valtrex samples when I had a bad cold sore...yes the herpes pill. It cleared it up in less than 2 days.

This is my issue too. I get them on the inside of my lips. Basically if I accident bite the inside of my lip or my toddle knocks her head into my mouth and I get even a tiny cut, it is going to become a canker. I hate those damn things because they hurt and once they start it is about 10 days until they are gone start to finish.

Ditto. Sucks knowing that every time you get any type of injury inside your mouth, you will have a good two weeks or so of subsequent pain from a damn canker.

FTR, I also get them at random times as well - not just from a bite or a kid's head to the mouth. I'm pretty sure walnuts cause them, but outside of that, I have no idea.

I have a mild allergic reaction to these too. Mostly itching in my mouth and throat that subsides relatively quickly.

I thought I was alone with itchy mouth reactions. I guess this is more common than I thought.
