All you iPhone users need to go download the mapping/navigation app called SCOUT right away. It is a new nav app from Telenav and it is kind of a mix of Yelp, maps, and navigation. Voice search is quick and accurate. Best of all, you can download the maps to your device so you don't need a data connection to use it and responsiveness is great. I still need to test it some more, but at first glance it seems like the best iOS nav app I have used thus far. Did I mention that it is FREE?"There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

What accessories do I need. I made an impulse purchase at Best Buy and bought a screen protector and case. The case seems decent but I'm curious what you folks prefer. This is what I got:

Done. So far, it looks pretty cool. I'll try the navigation out later today. I am liking Scout better than AroundMe for finding stuff near by. I've tried the Scout a little this morning. The visual navigation is excellent, as well as the voice commands. But the voice turn-by-turn is really spotty. It only rarely prompted me to turn, etc. I wonder if it has to do with the smaller roads I was on. I'll try on larger roads later."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. My wife got an iPhone 4S. She needed a new phone very badly (hers was over three years old!) and she didn't need 4G (they still don't have it where we live). Although the iPhone 5 has some big advantages with the processor, bigger screen and 4G, it appears as if the 4S got most if not all of the important iOS 6 updates unlike, say, the iPhone 4.
My thoughts after handling her phone a lot over the weekend:
1. The build quality and design is truly masterful. I think this alone is the reason so many choose the iPhone.
2. iOS on the iPhone is more different from iOS on the iPad than I would have thought.
3. iOS compensates for the lack of a back button (or return button) like what's found on Droid phones by having a return button on the screen. It's minor thing that makes a big difference. The bigger problem however is not having a stationary search button. They could do without the options and return buttons, but it would be nice to have a search button.
4. iOS does a better job of automatically resizing text on webpages and emails than my Droid phone.
5. The camera is excellent.
6. Apple was making gobs of cash off the iPhone so I understand why they didn't change the size of the screen between 2007 and 2011, but an increase in the size of the screen was badly needed. I have a Droid Incredible 2 which has basically the same size screen as the iPhone 5. I looked at the phones at the Verizon store and after handling the Samsung SIII for a bit, I have to concur that the phone is just too damned big. I've always felt comfortable with the screen on my phone along with its size and I think the 4 inch screen is the happy medium. The extra half inch on the iPhone was badly needed while an extra half inch and more beyond four inches is not. This leads me to my next point.
7. There are some great Android phones -- but they're all huge. The Droid Incredible when it came out was a great phone. Now it's the HTC One (which isn't even available on Verizon) and the SIII and the rest are more or less junk. While Apple ceded a lot of customers to Android because they failed to increase the size of the screen beyond 3.5 prior to the iPhone 5, Android is going to do the reverse by failing to have a decent phone that isn't enormous.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I didn't realize how big the S3 really is. The last thing I want is a huge phone in my pocket. I'm glad I'm an iPhone man. True, however I can't have big things in my pocket because I need the extra room in my crotch.Originally posted by Surfah View PostHey some of us are used to huge things in our pockets."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. I really like the size of the S3. I wouldn't want anything bigger, I don't think. Iphone 5 is a really strange size, IMO.Originally posted by Moliere View PostI didn't realize how big the S3 really is. The last thing I want is a huge phone in my pocket. I'm glad I'm an iPhone man. Agreed. It's nothing more than personal preference. Gidget at first didn't want such a large phone. In fact she was so adamant that I was just going to get her something else, but now she says she couldn't go back to a smaller screen. The iPhone 5 feels like a tv remote.Originally posted by falafel View PostI really like the size of the S3. I wouldn't want anything bigger, I don't think.
