For pure speed you will want to use boot camp but, IMO, it is a pain to reboot to run the occasional windose app. Therefore, I just use VMware Fusion which has all the performance I need.

While I haven't tried this yet it is possible to use VMWare with a boot camp partition. Therefore, you would have the best of both worlds. You can run Windows in a VM while in OSX but have the option of booting Windows natively if you need the additional performance.

Yes, you can do the same thing with Parallels now. Most benchmarks I have read rate Parallels ahead of VMWare now.

Back to your question:

I will always have to do a substantial part of my computing on the Windows side due to work. Numerous compute-intensive apps including ArcGIS. I also do a lot of work in MS Office: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook. Word I could probably do on either platform without a hitch. Excel I need to run in Windows because the stupid Mac version does not fully support VBA. Powerpoint I could probably do in either platform. For Outlook I could probably switch to Mac version of Mail/Calendar/Contacts but I would lose many of the VBA scripts I use for Automation and I would lose some functionality that I like (color-coding of appointments based on category for example). I also use Dreamweaver and Photoshop but they would probably work just fine on Mac platform.

So at the end of the day, what is the benefit of switching platforms? Video editing? Not worth it. A beautiful and lightweight laptop? That is tempting. Backup options seem better.

Looking at the whole package? Not sure it is worth the hassle. What am I missing?

How does the turn by turn compare to what you get on Android or what you get out of something like a Garmin car unit?

also, it doesn't have as much detail on the map (Like which building is which and names of establishments) and it certainly feels underdeveloped right now, but the guts are there and the turn by turn is nice since we didn't have it. I can't compare to droid having not had one and need more time to compare to the tomtom I have used.

I was under the impression that they fixed that in the 2011 edition. Of course, I don't really use any of the microsoft office stuff.

You have sold your soul to microsoft's VBA. It is time to move on and free yourself. Personally I am more of a c/c++/objective-c guy. Did I mention that Xcode rocks?

If you switched to Mac your mail/calendar/contacts/bookmarks/readinglists/etc. would all be magically sync'ed between all your iDevices. And things like the photos you take with your iPhone would just show up in iPhoto without manually sync'ing anything.

That already works now because my main account is an MS Exchange account. Everything is synched.

My next door neighbor is an IT guy for a big organization. He says that he switched to the Mac platform for a few weeks last year and found that it was different and better in some ways and a hassle in some ways, but at the end of the day he was not any more efficient than before.
