For the money they aren't worth it. In fact, they aren't worth it for half the money.

Not sure if Apple's security is as real as it's vaunted to be.

If you're not on 14.4 your phone is riddled with lots of publicly known vulnerabilities. The point being that iPhones are plenty vulnerable despite what lots of non-savvy folks (and businesses) think. Too many people think that using an iPhone makes them "safe" from issues and don't pay attention to security best practices, upgrades, etc.

Gotcha. But 14.4 is 1000% unhackable, right?

Yep, the webkit vulnerabilities are exceptionally bad.

                    • So I'm thinking of getting an iPad for my wife. I didn't realize there are so many different versions now. Since I don't want to have to worry about another type of charging connection, I'm limiting the options to those with USB-C. The 11" Pro and the Air are at the top of the list.

I see the differences in processors like the M1 on the new Pro vs the A14 and A12 for some of the other models. The M1 seems to have a substantial performance advantage while the A14 looks best for battery conservation.

I'm not expecting that she'll need much storage space. There was one model - last year's Air, I think - that had just 64 GB. I don't want to go that low, so I was planning on 128 GB or higher.

What other differentiation between the iPad models should I be considering?

What will it be used for. If it is just for browsing the internet and playing games, any of those processors will be fine. Although the M1 chip is the new hotness, it's probably overkill for casual ipad use. IF she is going to get into some stuff like photo or video editing, then a faster processor would be nice.

Apps and photos can take up a lot of space, so a higher memory can be worth the cost. Again, it depends on how you think it will be used.

The primary reason for getting it is so that she can access the stupid Clubhouse app, which is only available through iOS right now. Which means it's pretty much guaranteed that within a week or so of my buying an iPad, Clubhouse will become available on Android and/or PC.

Right now, most of her computing happens on a touchscreen Lenovo Yoga laptop. If/when she gets a new iPad, I imagine she'll find that some things are easier to do on the tablet than on the laptop. The program she uses that is probably toughest on a processor is probably Canva, but I'm guessing that a lot of its processing happens in the cloud. I don't imagine she'll be doing much that is particularly hard on any of the aforementioned processors.

The allure of the "better" processor is more about longevity than about current performance. We tend not to upgrade very often. When we do upgrade, I like things to last for a while. I think the last iPad I bought was the second generation. And I'd tell her to use that, except Apple doesn't provide iOS updates for it anymore.

So here are the models with USB-C that I'm considering:
                          iPad Pro
                          (3rd gen)
                          iPad Pro
                          (2nd gen)
                          iPad Pro
                          (1st gen)
                          iPad Air
                          (4th gen)
                          Processor M1 A12Z A12X A14

Not surprisingly, the latest generation iPad Pro has all the best stuff. Probably any of these will work just fine for my wife's needs. But I'm glad I put together this chart, because she hates the fingerprint scanner on her phone. So if I want her to be really happy with the purchase, I should probably go with one the Pro models with Face ID.

And now that I've looked at all these iPads, I now see that Clubhouse also works on iPod Touch. Hmmm.

I got Mrs. NWC the iPad pro with the keyboard for Christmas. She loves it. It does everything she needs it to and she likes the touch screen and pencil function. It has replaced most of what she did on the desktop.

If it is a gift meant to be used by more than one person, I'd recommend against it. It doesn't have functionality for more than one user account.
