    • My understanding is that apple will replace batteries for about $85. They just haven't really advertised it much. That isn't very expensive... at least when we are talking Apple product pricing.

But you still have the newer OS, which will still downgrade your performance.

supposedly the software only downgrades performance as the battery is losing its efficacy. So a new battery should fix it. I don't really trust them on that though.

My wife had an older phone. We replaced the battery for $35. Didn't seem to make much of a difference. She insisted she was fine with it, but I forced her to accept a new iPhone X for X-mas. It came in 2 days. She is happy.

I don't either. Easier to just downgrade all older phones.

                • Back in March, my 6 would last for about a half day, at which point it would reach 35% and then suddenly die completely. I didn't want to upgrade then because I was holding out for the fall offerings. So I paid $40 for some local company to put in an aftermarket battery. It worked great at first, but at this point, just 9 months in, my phone is usually at 25% by the time I'm heading home from work, if I don't plug it in while i'm at the office. If I use my phone a lot during the day, it will be nearly dead by 5pm. Looking forward to getting an X here shortly.

                    • It’s probably underrated because other phones/devices have had it for a few years. My X rarely depletes its battery to a point that I feel like I need it.

                        • Interesting rumor...

Apple is moving on from Intel because Intel isn’t moving anywhere

Apple’s abandonment of Intel chips is inevitable

A report from Bloomberg this week has made public something that should already have been apparent to tech industry observers: Apple is planning to replace Intel processors in Mac computers with its own chips starting sometime around 2020. The two California companies have enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership ever since Apple made the switch to Intel CPUs with the 2006 MacBook Pro and iMac, but recent trends have made the breakup between them inevitable. Intel’s chip improvements have stagnated at the same time as Apple’s have accelerated, and now iPhone systems-on-chip are outperforming laptop-class silicon from Intel’s Core line. Even if Intel never cedes its performance crown, the future that Apple is building will invariably be better served by its own chip designs.

Apple’s decision to ditch the world’s most popular CPU line for laptop and desktop computers may seem radical, but there are a number of key factors that actually make it obvious and unavoidable.

In other Apple news... the iPad refresh makes the new iPad rather affordable ("the best [tablet], in fact, under $500."):

APPLE IPAD (2018) REVIEW: PENCIL IT IN

Apple’s bare minimum still beats everybody else

Apple’s new base-level iPad is very good, but you knew that. Apple hasn’t produced a “bad” iPad in I don’t know how long — though it has allowed them to get a little long in the tooth from time to time. (The iPad Mini needs to either be refreshed or put down, for example.) Last year, my review of the iPad was summed up by simply telling you that it’s an iPad. The same thing applies this year.

But last year’s iPad earned effusive praise for packing a bunch of great technology into the newly low price point of $329. The same thing applies this year, but the technology isn’t quite as new. So the shine is off a bit. This iPad feels more like the result of paper-pushing rather than envelope-pushing.

This is the part where you’d expect me to tell you that since Apple is coasting a bit, there might be a better option out there, a product that competes with the iPad at the sub-$500 price point and delivers something that’s at least within the ballpark of functionality and experience.

You’d be wrong. There isn’t a single viable competitor to the iPad. It is the only good tablet for less than four or five hundred bucks. So, if nothing else, I’m thankful that it’s as good as it is.
                          [...]
This is a very good tablet. The best, in fact, under $500. It’s too bad that nothing else comes close, because maybe that competition would have inspired Apple to make something a little better.

                          • 82% of the teens own iPhones. These are the cool kids. 84% say they want to be a cool kid and their next phone will be an iPhone.

Over 80% of teenagers prefer iPhone to Android — and that’s great news for Apple

                            • American teenagers prefer Apple's iPhone to Android phones.
                            • 82% of American teenagers currently own an iPhone, the highest percentage ever in the history of a Piper Jaffray study about teens.

American teenagers continue to deeply prefer Apple's iPhone to phones running Android.

82% of teens currently own an iPhone, according to Piper Jaffray's "Teens Survey," which questions thousands of kids across 40 states with an average age of 16.

That's up from 78% in last fall, and it's the highest percentage of teen iPhone ownership Piper's seen in its survey.

iPhone ownership among teens could go even higher — 84% of teens say their next phone will be an iPhone.
