    • Those were some funny pics, esp the one of him taking an existing laptop and making a massive laptop that does the exact same thing. The side-by-side netbook comparison was good, too.

So in a nutshell, what does the iPad do that the iPhone can't do? It has a bigger screen and apparently has longer battery life (to accommodate the bigger screen). What else? These critiques don't seem too far off.....is this thing anything more than a large iPhone that doesn't make phone calls?

That's why I liked the iPhone being renamed the iPad Nano.

Where are getting your numbers from? The Reality Distortion Field? 98% of the movies are cut in Final Cut Pro? Are you kidding me??? Final Cut Pro might have more of a lock on the indie and amateur films, but in Hollywood, Avid is still a major player, if not the standard.

The only statistic that bears vague resemblance to your number is some number on Wiki that says

From the early 2000s, Final Cut Pro developed a large and expanding user base including many independent filmmakers. It has made inroads with film and television editors who have traditionally used Avid Technology's Media Composer. According to a 2007 SCRI study, Final Cut made up 49% of the US professional editing market, with Avid at 22%.[1]
And doing a little digging, I find this quote from this link:
            http://digitalfilms.wordpress.com/20...vs-avid-redux/

Although this would seem to give Apple the lead in the NLE wars, one must understand that the Final Cut world is heavily skewed with a wide range of amateur users – students, hobbyists and non-editing video professionals who occasionally do some of their own “hands on” cutting. I think that it’s fair to say that a greater percentage of Avid users are professional editors. It’s my observation that broadcast news and traditional (major studio) film and television show post is dominated by Avid NLEs. In contrast, the boutique editing world of small and medium markets has shifted in favor of Apple’s Final Cut. In all likelihood, the number of users who make a living with either Final Cut or Avid (Media Composer/NewsCutter/Symphony plus Avid DS) is probably fairly even.
Look, Final Cut Pro is great because it lowered the barrier of entry for people who want NLE (non-linear editors). But it does not have 98% of the market. It's ok to be a Mac or Jobs fanboi, but don't spout incorrect numbers.

I don't agree. The iPhone is successful because it is a phone. People need a cell phone. And Apple entered that existing market and did a little creative convergence. They allowed you to lose your mp3 player and just play mp3s of your phone. They created a platform that allowed people to create applications. Instead of needing your Macbook for small tasks (like looking up recipes, or finding directions) you could use your phone's browser or an iPhone app. The iPhone would not have been successful if it had not been a phone. People need a phone, and thus people carry their iPhones around.

Just like a Kindle is a luxury item, People do not need a iPad. I know that Apple is trying to create a new market here, but the only way the thing finds success simiilar to the the iPhone is if if it replaces a product that people currently need (e.g. a netbook/laptop).

I don't see how the iPad replaces your laptop/netbook. It's not powerful enough and does not have a platform to meet most people's computing needs. The iPad does not have a physical typing service, so you will still need a laptop for general use (Word, Excel, Photoshop, whatever). It it will be difficult typing on an iPad without the dock. Your hands will cover up a lot of the screen and your face will be staring face down at the table. I imagine that it's harder to type with an iPad than an iPhone, where you could at least type with your thumbs and hold the screen up to your face. Lastly, since the cheapest version only has 16GB of storage space, you'll still need to store your movies and music somewhere. Oh wait, that's why I have a Macbook and iPhone. The only thing the iPad really adds value is its ability to read material, like the kindle.

It'll definitely sell well for those people who can afford a third computing product (laptop, iPhone, iPad), but it won't have the numbers of the iPod or iPhone.

              • I know this is not an original thought, but I was struck by it when seeing a picture of an iPad next to an first (1st) generation iPod / digital music player. Five (5) years ago, if Apple had come out with the iPad / tablet PC, it would have been seen as incredibly innovative, and generated a lot of excitement. Today, it is getting, for the most part, a fairly lukewarm reaction. It makes you wonder what we will be carrying around five (5) years from now / in the future.

I doubt I get one ever because I don't have a space to use it, where I am not at a computer/laptop. However if I do get one, I don't want to get a first gen one. I'll wait another 6 months or more.

Have you seen the difference between Kindle 1 and Kindle 2? They aren't even in the same area code.

                          • I have a Touch and use it every day. I link it to the WiFi at work and get my email updates on it throughout the plant. When I have downtime I will surf the web or play a game. Most of my daytime CUF surfing is on my Touch. At they gym I watch TV shows I've ripped from DVD's. I keep a few movies on it as well in case I'm caught waiting somewhere.

Part of the reason I like the Touch is it's size. The size of the iPad is the reason it doesn't appeal to me. I simply do not need a larger Touch.

The one thing I hate about the Touch is the on screen keyboard. The keyboard is the one reason I will probably never have an iPhone. The slide out keyboard on my HTC Touch is much better.

                              • A friend of mine was in line to get an Ipad today at the Apple store in Salt Lake. He was 45th in line and he said about 200 people were there. The apple store announced they only had 150 ipads available. A guy walked up to him and said I will give you $200 for your spot in line. He said ok and switched the guy places in line, then took $50 of that and bought his way back in to the top 150.
