I've always thought that meant the elite; I looked it up and it means the exact opposite.

I'm waiting for the full Ryanair model to come here. Everything a-la-carte. Right now I can book a 9:30am flight on Ryanair from Berlin to London for 22.99 Euros on Sunday the 17th. A screaming deal, especially with a purchase so close to the date. Add in the mandatory taxes, fees and charges and I'm up to 50.20 Euros. Still a great price to get all the way from Berlin to London.

However, this will get me on the plane and off it. That's about it, although there doesn't appear to be a fee for carry on luggage and they aren't charging me by my weight yet. However, there is a fee for priority boarding, re-issuing boarding passes, bringing an infant, checking baggage (different fees for the 1st and 2nd bag), excess baggage weight, infant equipment, sports equipment, musical instruments, flight changes, and name changes.

You want a bag of peanuts? There's a fee for that. How about a water? Fee for that, too.

We are just about there in the US, but I'm just waiting for an airline to make it a point of differentiation and thus a selling point. From what I understand, Ryanair has done well in Europe.

Phew. I would have believed you if you had told me the opposite, and then I would have just felt like an idiot

Blast! I knew I should have spell checked that before I sent it off. Curse Google Chrome and its inability to automatically spell check Greek! I don't know if I've ever actually heard someone say it in real life, but have just seen it written. In my mind I always thought it would sound good pronounced as holy polly and the idea has translated into my writing.

Edit: Wikipedia tells me that it really is holi polloi, so looks like we both got it wrong

"Holi poli" has now made the list, along with "pre-madonna," "for all intensive purposes," and "exercise your demons."

also, how did Katie Lied "just look up" holi poli?
                  Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

And I always thought it was "Holy moley", as in "Holy moley, look at all these losers that are going to make my flight miserable."

                    Go figure.

When IJ first used the term, I thought that the definition he used was wrong, but I wasn't sure if he made a mistake, or that he referenced some other definition of the word that I was unfamiliar with. I knew he was referring to the term "hoi polloi" so I looked it up and learned I had been wrong.

I sometimes do this, check the word usage of CUFfers, so I can learn something new, especially:

                      DDD
                      SU
                      Landpoke
                      Wuap
                      Creekster
                      Goatnapper
                      Solon
                      and others.

I never check Indy's usage; he's very precise. I just take his word for it.

                        My work here is done

Also, I am flattered to have made KL's list of people whose word usage is worth checking.

Today I have been to the mountaintop. There is nowhere left to go but down.

Refundable fares (which are priced higher, obviously): "You can change your itinerary without paying a change fee."

Nonrefundable fares: "Changes to your itinerary are generally permitted upon the collection of an Administrative Service Fee and any difference in the applicable fare."

Trip insurance: "Coverage includes Trip Cancellation/ Interruption coverage that reimburses prepaid, unused, non-refundable travel expenses should your trip be cancelled or interrupted due to any covered reason."

(I'm a nerd for looking that up). Have they told you if your buddy's reason for changing the flight falls under what they cover?
He has to fill out a form and let them know the reason in writing. Then they will decide. I told them he found out his sister was going in for cancer surgery and he wanted to go to LA two days earlier than his scheduled flight to San Diego. Again, the guy wouldn't say if that qualifies or not and send in the form. $150 doesn't mean that much to this guy so I will have to bug him to get it done.

I was I were more nerdlike like you. I can't tell you the number of times I have spent money on something I didn't really understand.

You can change your flight anytime you buy it up to 24 hours before departure without extra fees. My wife recently changed a ticket twice on a flight from Reno. First she changed the day she was going to come back to Salt Lake. The she decided to fly into Vegas and changed the flight to there. No problem, whatsoever. In fact, she was credited some money because the flight to Vegas was cheaper than the flight to Salt Lake.
Southwest does not fly directly to San Diego. Otherwise, I would have picked Southwest.
