This year, we ended up sending out more than ever. In return, we received fewer than ever. In other words, our ROFI (return on friend investment) took a huge hit in 2009.
Over the past ten years, I began receiving fewer cards and more email letters. We are the digital generation, after all. This year though, I received fewer than before. Either the recession left them hanging their heads, or perhaps I should check my gmail spam folder.
A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."
We received a Christmas card that had a picture of the family cat in lieu of a picture of the family.
We received a Christmas card that had sand (from Hawaii) glued on it.
We received a Christmas card from our local Domino's Pizza (it was an actual card, not an insert), encouraging us to try out their newly improved pizza.
I can't help but wonder whether George Bailey would have felt so distraught had he known from the beginning that his local Domino's Pizza cared about him.

A guy I went to school with told me a funny story about a roommate of his. Apparently, the guy practically lived on pizza delivery. About a month after this roommate graduated and moved out, the local Pizza Hut manager actually called the apartment to make sure everything was okay - that they hadn't done something to upset a good customer.

My wife and I just finished putting together about 170 Christmas cards, with a one-page newsletter inside summarizing our year. Those that don't like reading letters can toss them, that won't bother us at all. But since we've moved this past year, we at least want all of our friends and relatives to know where we're at now. And sending them out early should reduce the number of cards forwarded from our old address.
While addressing each envelope, or inserting the card and letter, it gave us a moment to think about each of those people. That probably made it worth it right there. This will be the only contact we have with some of them this year.
My wife buys cards at the after Christmas sales then we store them for a year, so theoretically we save a few bucks on cards. Stamps are the biggest expense currently. I find it interesting that a hundred bucks worth of stamps is barely thicker than five $20 bills and otherwise of similar dimensions.
Time for the annual resurrection of the Christmas card thread...
We're half way through addressing, signing, inserting the letter, licking the flap, adding a return address, and putting a stamp on the envelope. We've dropped at least a dozen people this year that we haven't heard from and were really just acquaintances from places we've lived in the past. I still enjoy thinking about the people we're sending the cards to.
And somehow I need to get my wife to stop buying the really tiny cards where I have to fold the letter in half three times to get it into the envelope. She can't resist a real bargain at the after Christmas sales.
I don't want to open this thread unless there are actual christmas cards in here.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.
