Did work lead you to where you live?

Did family? Was it your choice? My wife would like to move to a different part of the country (pending some final school decisions) but have never gone about relocating. Seems pretty daunting to just pick up and move.

Work has always led me to where I live. It's my opinion that you

1. Can find a good place to live
2. Can find a good place to work
3. Can find a good salary for the work you do

But you rarely can find all three.

I would venture that most ideal locations require a pay raise, not a pay cut.

It was family that got us to move to where we are now but fortunately for us, I've been able to advance in my career at the same time. In the past we've relocated because of work.

Of course, I've never felt it a really big deal to pick up and move. In many ways, I really enjoy it. I love getting to know my way around a new city. I enjoy getting set up in a new home. I like being the "new family" in a ward.

My wife wants to live in San Diego or NYC. She said she would be willing to make less money (relatively speaking) to live in SD because of the weather, lifestyle and proximity to family. To move to NYC she would want household finances to increase. I had never really thought about it that way.

We've moved quite a bit, always for work. Like KC, I've enjoyed living different places.

When I got married I was ready to watch the entire state of Utah burn and would have enjoyed doing it. ldc was finished at BYU and suggested we move back to Eugene where she could work for he dad and I could go to school for a year. At which point we would evaluate where we wanted to live the for the longer term.

After the year was over I was in love with the Eug and couldn't imagine living anywhere else. I could also not have the job I have if I lived anywhere else, or make the salary. Ha, take that Indy!

I only applied for jobs in the South and the Inter-Mountain West. So, a little of both. I'm in Hartsville, South Carolina for work, but I chose to look for work in South Carolina.

This seems to be quite the theme around here, especially during these economic times. Frankly I don't get it. But then I might as well be from Mars compared to members of the big Mormon extended families around here so I can't really relate.

A buddy of mine who worked for a big pharma company took a big pay cut to "get back to utah" a few years back (they were in Reno I believe). He lost his job last January. The other day he told me if he were still in Reno he would still be employed. But then he said "it was so worth it" to get back to Utah. This from a guy who has been unemployed for almost a year. I don't get it.
