Water softeners are the most underrated thing ever, while buying an expensive water softener over a cheap one you from, say, Home Depot is one of the most overrated things.
Seriously, if you have hard water you need to get a softener. I bought a GE softener at Home Depot for about $400 when we moved into our new house that we built and all of our plumbing fixtures and areas around our sinks still look like new and require little upkeep. I felt the softener was a must because we had dark plumbing fixtures (oil-rubbed bronze is what they call it I guess) and we have a travertine floor in our shower (a big mistake in hindsight, no hard water stains but it's difficult to clean soap scum off the floors because most cleaning products will etch the travertine).
