    Oh Crap!

One of my son's best friends is Muslim. He's over quite a lot and I am always good about checking labels before I give him food to make sure there is no gelatin in it. Well, I quickly scanned the ingredients list of this package of popsicles and I didn't see gelatin. I obviously read too quickly because as I was putting them back in the freezer I read the back of the box which says, "with a touch of gelatin these pops stay frozen longer."

Ugh! What he doesn't know, won't hurt him, right? I have serious guilt now.

He just asked for another. Ack! I just said no we're not having anymore, even though I ordinarily wouldn't care.

What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. For all you know, your son is being fed Jamoca Almond Fudge ice cream when he's at his friend's house.

I have an admittedly shallow understanding of islam, but my impression is that the average Muslim does not sweat too much things like this that happen accidentally. I don't think you need to tell the parents, but if you did, I would bet they wouldn't think it was a big deal. It is good of you to be conscious of this and attempt to keep things kosher for him.

It reminds me of the first breakfast I had with my new step mother. I had been living across the country, and did not know her well. I went out to breakfast with her and my father. I ordered first, ordered bacon, and then, remembering that she was Jewish, spent the meal wondering if I had performed a great offense.

Of course, when I later saw her eat bacon herself, I figured that she wasn't real strict with the dietary laws.

Lol, sup should call and say to the parents "I hope this is kosher, I gave him some gelatin on accident."

        Why don't Muslims eat gelatin?

Gelatin comes from all sorts of animals and so depending on the animal or the way in which it was slaughtered might not be kosher.

These things happen. I don't think it is worth telling anyone or losing any sleep over. I think you are fine just not giving him anymore.

I agree. Having worked closely for a number of years with both Hasidic Jews and Muslims who eat strictly Halal, if they're really worried about it, they won't eat ANYTHING even remotely questionable that they didn't prepare or purchase themselves.

I always got a kick out of a particular Jewish guy in the office who insisted he ate Kosher - and whose favorite lunch-time meal was cheeseburgers...

One of my Mom's favorite Christmas experiences concerns a similar problem. When my Dad was in the Army, we always gathered up all the strays in the ward (missionaries, single GIs) for the holidays. One year, one of the invitees asked if he could bring his roommate. Mom said sure. Our Christmas Eve diner menu was included ham as the meat. Anyway after diner is over and everyone has eaten there fill, the roommate casually mentions that he is sure glad he is a reformed Jew. He hadn't had such a good meal since joining the army (If I remember right, he had about three helpings of the ham, I was about 8 at the time. The memory and the stories probably have been become embellished over time) Mom says that she hasn't been so embarassed before or since. She laughs about it now, but at the time she was mortified.

I guess the poing is if you are really concerned find out how stirctly they observe there dietary laws.

I may be small, but I'm slow.
