    Doctors said a victim of a car accident 23 years ago was in a coma.

    In reality, he was conscious the whole time. I can't imagine what that must have been like.

                      The only thing I can think of as worse is when anesthetic doesn't fully work for people going into surgery. I've seen some accounts of people who are conscious and can feel the procedure, but the anesthetic paralyzed them so they couldn't do anything about it. Just horrible.

                          The movie Awakenings was about a ward of comatose patients who, after many years, came temporarily to full consciousness using an experimental drug. While they were still in their catatonic state, a person asked one of the doctors, "How do you know they aren't fully conscious, aware of what's going on, but unable to communicate that to us?" The doctor (Max Von Sydow) shook his head, and said he didn't want to believe that was even possible, "That is simply unthinkable." Unbelievably awful, and yet it happens.
