    Windows 7 for $30 if you're a student

You can order a copy of Windows 7 Home or Professional (or both, maybe?) for only $30 each if you have a student email address (i.e. @byu.edu).

i've read elsewhere that Windows 7 isn't going to work great on computers that aren't pretty new. Does it require tons of RAM? I've had a Vista machine for just over 2 years and I really like it. The first six months were brutal (constant upgrades and super-slow) but I upgraded the RAM and the software seemed to get ironed out and now the thing runs smoothly.

If you can run Vista which is a memory hog you should be just fine with 7 from what I have read.

lol, I just logged onto Route Y for the first time in over five years. I couldn't believe that I could still get on. I then rerouted my byu.edu/byu.net address to my gmail account and now I too have an offer to buy Windows 7 for $30. My law school address was cleansed at some point in time during the past five years (I tried to log on to groupwise but couldn't do it). I haven't used that byu.edu address in probably eight years now.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I bought a desktop with XP right before the Vista machines came out. I have two gigabytes of RAM. Would that be enough for Windows 7?

I'm in this same boat. I bought a machine that came with a free vista upgrade when it came out in Jan/Feb (two months after I got the computer). I think I have about 2 GB of RAM.

Also, I've tried logging into my route y account before. I think it wouldn't give me access to my email. Do you have access to it?

On my route y page, it didn't actually have a link to an email box, but there was a link to an email alias manager. You aren't allowed to forward any byu.edu address to an alias, but you can do it with byu.net. So entered my user name but instead used byu.net as opposed to byu.edu and forwarded it to my gmail account. I then plugged in my byu.net username on that page you linked to and sure enough MS sent me an email offering it for $30.

Dang, I can't remember my password for byu.net. I'm this close!

The MS website says that you need 1 GB for 32 bits and 2 GB for 64 bits. I'm pretty sure I have a 64 bit processor (I bought this compute in the summer of 2006) and it has 2 GB of memory. Will the computer run like crap if I put Windows 7 on it?

I took a continuing education class from the University of Alaska last year. Sounds like I should check to see if my alaska.edu address is still active.

Apparently when you go to buy it (i.e., after you've passed the email part) there is an option to buy professional. You have to click a link that says "Do you need a domain login?" and it will take you to the Professional product. Or so says my friend who pointed this out to me. I haven't yet tried it.

This is what I want to know. Will 7 max out my 2 GB of ram, or will it take up 1 and leave me with 1 to, you know, compute and stuff?

Vista uses almost exactly 1 GB of RAM on my machine. Before I beefed up my RAM to 2 GB's, I could turn the thing on and that was about it. The specs. for Vista said it required 1 GB, which was true, but deceptive in that you couldn't do anything else.

I think I'm going to wait until I get a new machine in a year or two.

This just might be my anti microsoft bias showing, but I usually don't get anything Bill put out for at least six month after release. That way they can get the bugs worked out.

I may be small, but I'm slow.
