SIRS and I are going Egyptian this year. I'm wearing a King Tut/Pharaoh outfit and she has a Cleopatra costume.

For some reason, we're suddenly in the adult Halloween party circuit.

I tried to think of some way to convey nerdy outrage that King Tut and Cleopatra lived a thousand years apart. Then I tried to make a joke about how I was going to come as Antony and steal your lady. But in the end, I just sound more geeky and less funny each time I start. They're good ideas for costumes. You're going to have fun.

My best prop is that I took the gold, hieroglyphics cover off of a 1970s BoM and wrapped it around a wand to make a scepter. It looks awesome!

My wife loves Halloween, so I have learned to love it, too. The kids really dig it, so this is a fun month for us.

It seems that we dress up 3 times at Halloween: Halloween party with friends and their kids, Ward Trunk or Treat, and Halloween night.

Each event has a different vibe in our family.

The Halloween party with friends is a time for the kids to wear what they want to wear.

The Ward Trunk or Treat is a time to wear what we, as parents, want them to wear. It is a time to talk to our adult friends and be entertained by what we forced our kids to wear.

Halloween Night is when my kids tell me what to wear.

Our kids are still in the Star Wars/Disney phase, so my son is going as some jedi type deal (an excuse to carry his glow in the dark light saber), my one daughter is going as Cinderella (with plastic "glass" slippers) and my other daughter is going as Alice in Wonderland. They will wear those costumes at the friend party and on Halloween night.

For the Ward Trunk or Treat, I try to usually think of something that folks my age will enjoy. One year, we all went as Devo (Freedom of Choice album cover, complete with energy domes). None of the little kids knew what we were, but they thought the hats were cool. All the adults loved it.

This year, I wanted to dress the puffy check as skeletons/Cobra Kai, I would dress up as a shower, and my wife would go as that lame whatever it was costume that Ali wore to the Halloween dance. My kids thought the skeletons were scary, so I might have to wait one more year for that one. I am still soliciting ideas for the group theme.

For Halloween night last year, one of my daughters asked me to go as The Man with the Yellow Hat. She went as Curious George. It was actually fun. The costume was ridiculous but she loved it and we were a hit. This year, my other daughter wanted to pick my costume. She has a very unique personality. She asked me to be either a table or a DVD. So I chose DVD. That's it folks. For Halloween this year, I'm going as a DVD. Should be good.

My daughter is going to be a ninja and my son a fireman. My wife is going to be a witch, and I have got the scariest warlock costume you have ever seen. I have an assortment of fake tattoos, high-quality fake teeth, black eyeliner and all sorts of other goodies. I stopped just short of getting creepy contacts. Next year, though, I'm going to get a pair of the ones that glow in black light and then replace the light bulbs outside my front door with black light bulbs. I also have a mix I am putting together of really creepy sounds - not screams and such, but much more subtle creaking and things. This will be playing from two stereos that will be cleverly hidden.

Note to anybody who comes to my house: I reward good costumes with handfuls of king-size candy bars. Last year we had a kid who made his own transformer's Optimus Prime costume out of cardboard and paint. The cool part was that he could actually transform into a semi. It was awesome, and he was duly rewarded.

Since Gidget is prego I don't think we're doing anything. We'll also be in Oregon next week and will be spending time with her family who don't really celebrate Halloween. Gidget has never been trick or treating in her life.

Her dad (not religious) never cared for the holiday so they always did something as a family instead like dinner and a movie or bowling. To be honest, because of work the last two years I have yet to take my own daughter trick or treating. So I think me and FIL will be taking our little Minnie Mouse (she's in the Disney phase too) out for the first time together.

I was hoping to go as DJ Lance or Max from WTWTA.

I thought it would be funny to get a bunch of blue vests and yellow dots and some ridiculous outfits and go as Walmart workers/customers for a family theme, but my kids wouldn't go for it. That could have been pretty fun. Oh well.

My boys want to be Army guys, my 5 year old daughter wants to be SuperGirl (which is nice since she has always picked princess stuff in the past), and my 19 month old has an adorable Mary Poppins costume. I'm going to be unoriginal this year and dress up as Princess Leia. I made a Jedi Robe that Aristides can wear if we can only get him to dress up.
