I was at the DMV yesterday. Immediately behind me in line was a middle-aged asian man and a 40s black woman. They strike up a conversation. It goes like this:

Woman: Where are you from originally?
Man: My mother! (he chuckles)
W: Oh! Haha, I mean, what city?
M: Japan. ()
W: Oh! I work with a lot of Philippinos!
M: [inaudible] (presumably he was setting her straight)
W: Oh. But the Philippines is by Hawaii, right? Which is near Japan?
M: No. Hawaii is 6,000 miles from San Francisco. Japan is another 6,000 miles from Hawaii. The Philippines is in the south, another 4,000 miles from Japan.
W: Is it by Tahiti?
M: No... well, no.
W: I thought Tahiti was an island down there.
M: Well, they it is part of, how you say, Polynesia. Hawaii, Tahitit, Samoa. Those are all Polynesian islands. Indonesia too. ()
W: Oh! Polynasian? Oh, that makes sense! So they asian, too, oh I see. That make sense, because of the eyes, and the hair and the skin. ()
M: Yeah.
W: Like in Rio de Janeiro (:igiveup

Then they started talking about how poor the people in Rio are and how there are some pretty places there, but also some nasty places.

*Only applicable if you're a one of those insufferable New York gomers who believe even the most ordinary of experiences is somehow magically transformed into a transcendent event by the simple fact that it occurred in New York.

Today at a red light I saw an older Ford F-150 that had a decal of Calvin, of Calvin and Hobbes fame, urinating on Jeff Gordon's number 24. A few stops later I saw Calvin prostrating himself before a cross on the back of an old Buick Century.

I agree with this. Watterson put a gigantic amount of effort into keeping C&H unsullied by any merchandising. It sucks that the most common places to see him now are kneeling before a cross or peeing on something, both of which are very out of character.

Of course, as Hobbes would say: "Your grandpa takes the funnies pretty seriously".
