    Good parenting idea....or irresponsible?

    I'm LDS.

When I was about 12, my dad gave me a drink of his black coffee. I spit it out.

About that same time, my Grandpa gave me some of his beer. Same reaction.

I don't see how anyone actually enjoys the taste of those two drinks, unless its an acquired taste over time.

My question: I have 2 teenage girls, and am considering buying a black coffee from Starbucks & some horrible tasting beer (Pabst?, Old Milwaukee?) to let them taste it (if they're interested). The idea being that, inevitably, they'll be challenged to taste it at some point during their teenage career, so I wouldn't mind having first crack at it while I can control how awful it tastes (no sugar, no cream etc....), hoping the lesson sticks with them until they're adults.

Bear in mind, we don't even drink Coke/Pepsi.

By doing that you are giving them approval to do it also what if they like it? Maybe I should take my boys to Nevada and hire the ugliest whore I can find so it will turn them off to sex.

My children (ages 8 and 3) have tasted beer, wine and coffee with no noticeable ill effects or degeneration of their character.

I will keep you posted should their conditions change.

Yeah, but what was their starting point?

The peer reviewed study will be released in good time; until then the data is under wraps.

Get them unfiltered cigarettes too. My mom did this and it seemed to work well. My dad was against it the whole time, however. He refused to be present when my mother passed around the beer. I think it's kind of a tradition in her family as my grandparents did the same thing for her.

Btw, I refused to smoke... but my little brothers didn't .

I would go for a Guinness if you are having them drink a nasty beer, or so I have heard.

I think it is an interesting idea to say the least. Have you considered if it backfires? What if they love the taste of beer?

In that case, I would tell them that I tricked them and that it wasn't really beer, but a stein full of my pee.

I have a buddy who once lent his jacket to a friend when he was a teen. Anyway, this friend left his nearly full pack of cigarettes in his jacket when he gave it back to this kid whose father discovered the pack in the jacket pocket. His dad thought they were his son's and made him smoke the entire pack to teach him a lesson. He said he was green as can be and puking when he was done. I always wondered if he is still friends with that kid.

What kind of punishment is that? That nicky buzz would have been awesome.

How dumb is your premise that no one actually enjoys the taste of coffee and beer? Are the millions of people that drink coffee and beer on a daily basis doing so out of ignorance, or are they just being ingeniously duped by Satan?

I enjoy the taste of both Coffee and Beer. I have given them up, but I enjoyed every last drop. I need someone to teach me a lesson.

I was going to make my boys take a whole bottle of Viagra, just to teach them that erections aren't always useful.

                            No they are not.

I don't know if you want to do that. I read an article where a guy did what you suggest and had a case of priapism and now is impotent.
