And the forecast is: Snow and wind

We're coming off the mountain with cows today, and this is the forecast. Most of them are corralled and ready to haul off, but we're still out 50 head, which we'll be looking for today and tomorrow. If the weather is too bad, the trucks won't haul and we'll have to trail them down. Heaven help us.

Today: Snow showers, mainly after noon. High near 37. South wind 13 to 16 mph becoming north northwest between 22 and 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around 2 inches.

Tonight: Snow showers and areas of blowing snow. Low around 17. Wind chill values as low as -5. North northwest wind 28 to 31 mph increasing to between 40 and 43 mph. Winds could gust as high as 60 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of around 5 inches.

Thursday: Areas of blowing snow and a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 29. Wind chill values as low as -5. Northwest wind between 25 and 32 mph, with gusts as high as 46 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 20. North northwest wind between 15 and 22 mph.

I am sure you are a competent Cowboy and will handle it just fine. Just the same it doesn't sound like fun to me. Those tough conditions are the reason I didn't let my kids grow up to be cowboys.

Cowboy, I usually envy the romanticized version of what you do. Then you post something like this and reality sets in.

        You are a man. I'm a wuss.

Pretty much my thoughts. Sometimes I picture Cowboy playing the guitar or harmonica while sitting by a campfire that is warming a can of beans dinner amidst a snow flurry and think that's pretty rad. Then I think, not for me.

            A question:

So is it true? If you have 499 head safely corralled in, will you then leave the herd and go out into the raging storm, and search far and wide for the one that has strayed?

Wait... you mean you don't actually know where they are?! Please tell me there's some type of radio- and/or GPS-related technology that can be attached to each head of cattle... is that kind of thing available? Is it cost-prohibitive?

Good luck. As I look west toward the Bighorns it appears they're already getting hit.

Instead of wishing him luck, why don't you get your lazy ass out there and help him? Talk is cheap landpoke.

I hear you Cowboy. Its like 62 degrees here in Vegas. Sunny, but still, pretty freezing.

I didn't push them, so they aren't greedy capitalists like the old man. I failed them. 2 housewives, manufacturing rep, sheriff and one still trying to figure out what he wants to be.

The one thing I can say for all of them is that they seem quite happy. I guess that is what really counts.

I know. That is why I go without many nice things in life and just hoard the money so I can leave it to the kids. Just to make up for it in some small way.

Let me know if anyone needs me to start adding the smilie guy, I prefer not to, but I don't want someone PMing me with the name of a therapist to go see.
