    An interesting request

    from my ailing uncle....

He is in a long, slow decline brought on by a traumatic head injury (He fell off a roof and has never been quite the same).

He has asked me that, upon his demise, I go through his personal things and dispose of anything besmirching of character. He has asked that I do this before the formal arrangements for his estate.

It occurs to me that my uncle's request might be a good idea for many, many people who are near death.

I have known people who have "Porn Buddies" (I forget if this is the name they actually use). The duties of this role include, if the person suddenly dies or is in some other condition where people will be going through his stuff, the buddy is supposed to go over to the person's house before anyone else can get there, and throw away all of his porn (more common years ago) or erase it from his computer.

That is an interesting request. I agree with the thought that others should do the same. You should have seen the shock on my families face when they found a Porn stash cleaning out my great grandfathers house after he died(he was a SP)

If it is just a porn stash or two, I would definitely honor his request. What is sort of interesting though it that it might be more than a porn stash. Sleeping in EQ, have you put any thought into the question of what you wouldn't cover up? How far would you be willing to go to protect your uncle's reputation?

My wife had an uncle that died of cancer about 10 years ago. He lived in a shack in the middle of a shanty town on the bad side of the tracks in <redacted>, <redacted>. Nobody knew what kind of cancer because he'd only been diagnosed 10 days before. The death certificate literally said "cancer."

He had been a drug addict (and by drugs, I mean mostly heroin, coke and meth) for something like 40 years. And he was a chain smoker with a vicious porn habit.

How do I know all of that? Because I had to clean out his shack. My BIL at the time was about 14 and there were certain portions of this four room, 500 square foot hovel that we directed him away from because of the contents thereof. There was a lot of porn and a lot of drug paraphernalia (no actual drugs that I found - likely used up at the end). This was a man who had intentionally isolated himself from his family (we had no idea he was dead or where he lived until we got the call) and at the end was unable to leave his own couch to even defecate, with nobody there to help him.

I learned more about life through the death of that one man I had never met than I had through all of my other experiences put together up to that time.

This threadjack is my way of saying that I would absolutely honor his request, SIEQ.

I would agree with his request with the caveat that he let you do it now. If he gets better, he shouldn't return like a dog to his vomit.

Why does everyone think Porn and Drugs? Protesting too much? Maybe it turns out he is a member of the tri-lateral commission. Maybe he has receipts from contributions to DUkakis' presidential campaign. Maybe he has a copy of Anne Franks' diary where he puts in inter lineal comments rooting for the Nazis. Maybe his moniker is Seattle Ute. Who knows?
