  • WARNING: SITE HOSTING PROBLEMS

We are having problems with our web hosting service (siteground). They claim that our bandwidth is so large that we need to move to a dedicated server. Instead of paying $99 per year, we will pay $99-299 per month. We simply can't afford that. Thus, we are scrambling to find another hosting service. I have 24 hrs to get something set up or they will shut us down.

If you have any recommendations on a cheap web hosting service, let me now.

    Stay tuned.

JeffLebowski, does that cost seem accurate to you? Was CG costing $100+ per month. Yowza, it is expensive to run a message board! 299 a month...ouch.

How much bandwidth are we using? A VPS woudl be cheaper than dedicated and they will come with a given amount of bandwidth. Siteguard should be able to tell you how much we are using.

I don't know what your needs are for this. I assume you'll need php and MySQL access with vBulletin. I have no idea what you'll need for bandwidth or disk space.

If you get the deluxe plan from goDaddy, it is $7 per month (150GB disk space and 1,500 GB network bandwidth), which is less than you currently pay. Even the unlimited plan for $15 a month will only cost you $80 more a year.

Definitely better than your current provider.

But I'm sure this is the obvious answer and you already looked into this.

I would be wary of those offering unlimited bandwidth for a very low fee. Likely there is fine print that says it's unlimited until you use too much (at their discretion), which may be what is going on with the current host.

If it helps in terms of recommendations, it doesn't look like bandwith is the only issue at least according to the host... its also CPU time.

EDit: Actually, it dowsn't look it is a bandwith issue at all... the host is upset about CPU usage.

See below. There is a chart showing CPU usage.

                -----------------------------

                Dear ____,

As we have previously informed you, your account cougaruteforum.com was consuming a very high percentage of the CPU time allowed on the shared server and we have provided the possible options for you to resolve this issue. Unfortunately, you have not taken any actions and your site remains very heavy for the shared server. It affects its overall performance negatively that is why we had to deny the access to your website. We are providing the latest generated graph :

                http://cougaruteforum.com/7-05-2009-...eforum.com.jpg

If you wish to have your website reactivated, you will have to upgrade it to a higher level hosting solution option. You can review our dedicated offers via the link below:

                http://www.siteground.com/dedicated_solutions.htm

Each of these solutions will be much more suitable for your website and will provide you with exclusive server resources, needed by a website of this scale to function and grow freely. We would like to remind you that as an existing SiteGround customer, you will get a beneficial upgrade package including:

                - No set up fees
                - Free website content transfer from the shared server to the dedicated machine
                - No website downtime during the upgrade

If this solution is not suitable for you we can provide you with a back up of your account so that you can transfer your files to another server.

Thank you for your understanding and we hope this case will be solved in the best way for both parties. We are looking forward to your reply.

                Sincerely,
                Ivaylo Todorov

Yes, bait-and-switch. We are currently paying $99 per year for the hosting. No they are forcing us to upgrade.

My gut feeling is that they are gaming us. In any case, I will explore all options before agreeing to that rate.

So have you looked at what the CPU is doing?

Is it the database? PHP? Do they have any monitoring systems you can look at and verify what is going on? Or do they just send you pretty graphs?

I have always had good luck with GoDaddy. And they host some big sites.
