  • How do you view threads?

I think one of the big hurdles for many making the transition here from CB is the format. Folks are used to being able to look at an entire thread in the threaded mode and see what has been said. That is not possible for some threads here because of their size, so using the threaded mode to view becomes cumbersome.

For a while, I used the hybrid mode to view threads. This allowed an overview of the entire thread, and also allowed me to read the thread without clicking on each post. The problem with this mode is that, with larger threads, you miss a lot of posts because they are listed in threaded order rather than chronological order. Then I changed to linear mode exclusively, and life became better.

I love the linear mode. Because posts show up in chronological order, I don't miss any of the posts in a thread, and most responses to a specific post are quoted. It's pretty much the only way to read these fora, in my opinion,

Anyway, I'm curious about what modes people use.

wherefore, men are free according to the flesh, and all things are given which are expedient unto CUF; and they are free to choose linear mode and eternal life through the great Mediator JeffLebowski, or to choose threaded/hybrid mode, according to the power and captivity of cougarboard. for cougarboard seeketh that all men might be miserable, like unto itself.

I empathize with you. I did that once and realized it took Houdini-like skills to get out of that mode.

          See if this helps:

One of the biggest reasons I didn't abandon CB for CG was the format. This format bothered me a lot, and it seemed weird to have to scroll down, sometimes a few inches, to go from one post to the next. Plus the "quote" feature seemed to add unnecessary length, and not seeing up front who was participating in the thread was a drawback as well.

But I've come around to this format as the better one. CB's lends itself to snide shots and no continuity. The quote feature is a great way to provide an intro for one's own comment and provides needed context. Thus, with obvious exceptions, I think posts here tend to be more thoughtful and interesting.

When I log on, I usually start right at the top (Stadium) and work my way down through all threads that show new stuff. If it's a subject that doesn't interest me (Helloooooo, Lakers!), I'll skip it. But I review pretty much every forum. I was a seven-year CB addict, but with the help of several caring sponsors here, I was able to complete the twelve steps and replace that problem with an even greater one, the siren song of CUF.

One of the only things I liked about this format when I first switched was the quote feature. It made it clear, at least to me, who or what I was responding to.

I have grown to favor this format, when I go to CB now I feel stressed out and anxious. Like I have probably missed something, and if I take any time to read or respond I will have wasted time and missed more. That said I still feel that the CB style is better for in game posting.

This was my experience as well. I now prefer this format. I think CB would be well serve to adjust its ordering to most recent post in the thread and not when the thread was created. I.e. move threads to the top of the list that get new posts.

It would lead to better more thought out discussions like there are here. I'm happy here though.

                    Linear - Oldest first.

I just switched to threaded to take a look, and I now have a small entrance wound in the right temple of my head.

I was unaware there was a different way to view the board other than linear.

I'm finding it superior as well. Between my time spent on Rivals and other vbull forums, it's preferable to CB/uf.n
