How did you find CUF?
Late Sunday night while still basking in the glory of the Ducks dropping 65 points and 694 yards on the Rose Bowl dreaming Beavers, I was trying to find somewhere to enjoy some football conversation. I had been growing tired of CougarBoard for months, outside of my Friend Only posts, and went back to CG, where I had been among the first to sign up when MikeWaters started the site but it had never really stuck with me, to lurk. I saw the link signed up, was accepted and found many of my favorite posters here and have stayed around.
How did you choose your moniker?
When I started attending the University of Oregon my former mission president, who had played football for the Huskies, sent me a note and a "I support a Husky Free Northwest" bumper sticker. He said to me that I already knew about BYU/Utah but it was time for me to learn about Oregon/Washington. At the time his son was an active poster on CB, so I used HuskyFreeNorthwest.
What do you do (other than read CUF)?
I work for what I call the family business, but is really my wife's family business. My part of it is being the overlord for 155 US Forest Service campgrounds in the Deschutes, Willamette and Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie forests, as well as 3 RV parks and starting Monday a 20 cabin resort. I love my job.
Did you ever consider an alternative career path?
Yes many. About 5 years ago the local sports radio station held a contest called "The Sports Idol" where they were giving a 1 year contract to host a 3-6 pm show. I could not try out because the contest started the same day I ran the Edmonton Marathon. For about 2 years I held a huge pity party for myself every afternoon when I would listen to the radio show, thinking I would have won the contest and blah blah.
I now feel no regret, in fact I was thinking about this today as we were at the new project doing inventory and what not about how much I would be missing out on if I was stuffing my ego with 3 hours of meaningless sports talk, taking myself way to seriously (had I even won, which would have been doubtful at best). Instead I get to talk sports to my hearts content with a friendly community online, and spend my days out with old growth trees, on lakes, trails and camping with my boys.
How many time zones have you lived in and what is your current time zone?
I guess we are counting missions for this so 3, Eastern, Mountain and Pacific.
What are your sports loyalties?
This is hard for me to answer, as I find myself growing apart from BYU more by the year. 10 years ago I would have never thought anything could come between my obsession with BYU football. However if I am to answer honestly my loyalties would go
1. Oregon basketball (Men's)
2. Oregon football
3. BYU football
4. Utah Jazz
5. Los Angeles Dodgers
6. Jacksonville Jaguars (I still have no idea why I like them)
What's your standing in the church?
I hate sacrament meeting most of the time. I teach the Teachers Quorum and love hanging out with the YM. I believe the church is true, however I also think that other things might work for other people to find spiritual happiness. I think my wife views me as on the verge of apostasy, perhaps I am. I don't feel any different though.
Are you looking forward to Wuap's welcome question and what do you think it will be?
Sure. Probably something about some war that I don't really know much about. I would be happy if it was about Vietnam.
Do you expect anyone to respond to this thread?
I imagine somebody will out of politeness, maybe not though. Either way is fine with me. I feel comfortable enough with myself to not cry, or at least not sob hysterically if nobody responds.
