Posted under TheSportsProfessor name on Utefans.net, but having retired from that board, have retired the board name as well. TheSportsProfessor name comes from an amusing character developed by Craig Miller of the Dunham & Miller sports talk team in Dallas. Together, however, Dunham & Miller are known as The Gentle Musers -- thus keeping with the theme, have renamed my board moniker as mUUser.
In addition to Utah, have lived in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and South.
Time & distance has softened my stance on the Utah-BYU rivalry --- a lot, a whole lot. Frankly, I'm encouraging my kids to consider both schools, among many others, when deciding on a post high-school education. Both schools are good -- neither are world-class.
Who am I?:
- Religion: Card-carrying LDS. From a doctrinal standpoint, it mostly makes horse-sense to me (once you can get past the idea that religion itself is an exercise in believing the unbelievable -- thus faith). I do, however, often struggle with the cultural & social aspects of it (meaning, those things that have little or nothing to do with eternal salvation but are stressed as if they do), somedays feeling like I'm hanging onto "activity" by my fingernails. Unless I could ski year-round I don't think I'd thrive in Utah. You can't go 3 days without opening the paper and reading something about the fracture between LDS and non-LDS. No other place in the country is as divided along religious lines as Utah....social, sports, education, basically everything -- seems to come down to religious affiliation. Would get old. Fast.
- Education: Joint Master's Degree. Utah
- Family: Happily married. 22 years & 3 kids. Currently 2 dogs.
- Home: Somewhat of a Nomad. Have lived in B12 Country, B10 Country and currently tarrying in the SEC. Yes, in my experience, the SEC is the most fanatical about its college athletics.
- Politics: lean conservative -- particularly as it relates to tax policy. Obama has taken the disaster of Bush's last year, and within months has managed to turn it into a catastrophe.
- Health: Believe in keeping reasonably fit. Don't eat much red meat as it sits in my gut like a rock. Use a trainer twice a week for weights (a good personal trainer is worth his or her weight in gold), and aerobic exercise (usually a treadmill or walking the dogs) 3 times a week. Try to keep fat & caloric intake to a reasonable level, but do have a soft spot for salty snacks & vegging with a movie. Having said that, could stand to lose 10 pounds -- 15 wouldn't kill me either.
- Other: somewhat of an obsessive/compulsive, that is, a moderate clean-freak. I see a couple of my least favorite posters have already signed-on with the board, so we'll see how that goes. OTOH, I see a couple of my favorite posters have signed-up as well. If trend holds, probably won't post every day, but when I do, will likely hang out more in the religion & politics area, occassionally dipping my feet into football, while dipping my big toe into the other areas. I also like to use these boards to solicit opinions -- you know -- what do you think about such&such car, or has anyone used this particular ski?, if you've vacationed to wherever, where did you stay? etc...etc...
We'll get along if:
- you have a healthy obsession for skiing, waksurfing, fastpitch softball or any other sport/activity
- you're a Ute, Coug or any other cool sports fan
- you don't make it, or take it, personal
- you aren't cruel to anything. My all-time favorite bumper sticker: Mean People Suck.
- you're frank, but respectful to everyone
We'll never get along if:
- you have a filthy mouth
- blow cigarette smoke in my face
- drink and drive
- are loud at movies
- play games on the road
- you're one of those guys that believe Pit Bulls are naturally aggressive towards people, and push for Breed Specific Legislation. If that's the case, I'm confident in saying you're a complete ignoramus and want nothing to do with you. You frighten me.
- you're a Yewt, Zoob, Zoobzz (my special name for Jazz fans that morph into the whiniest cry-babies in the world of sports) or any other uncool sports fan.
Anything else? Just ask -- perhaps I'll answer. Perhaps not.
