Is there some meaning to the letters that are capitalized? Also if SU offers to lend you any philosophy books make sure he has not dropped them in the urinal.

Unless I am missing something, there doesn't seem to be any story here,

Unless the whole of the story is that you were named something else and then you changed it.
Oh well, one less thing for me to read.
Welcome.

So, Greece then? You're golden!Originally posted by Solon View PostWelcome Son of Perdition (I'm not going to try to get the right capital letters).
It's about time we settled the Cyprus question. Turkey's entry to the EU is hung up over it, and I once spent an afternoon in a jail cell in Nicosia (true).
The right answer should be that it belongs to Aphrodite.

Well, that's neither here nor there. Sense and reference refer to different things than the putative intention often assigned to an author's work. For example, if I write right now, HuskyFreeNorthWest is a very cool and funny guy; look at his numerous posts for examples of his wit and charisma. People might assume that I'm kissing his <redacted>; they might agree with me (unlikely), they might assume that I want something from him. I deny my intention in my readers. Sure, I have an intention in doing so, but HFNW and everyone else's interpretation of what I write cannot know what I mean, no matter how much they think they know my intention. Hell, even if I write that I said what I did about him to make him smile, you cannot believe what I say at face value. The historicity of my text is key to your reader response.Originally posted by SonOFpeRdiTioNHmm. So do you also consider Gottlobe Frege's distinction of "sense and reference" meaningless?
Frege wanted us to think about me being wuapinmon and Mac Williams. wuapinmon doesn't mean just me, it means, "What's happening, mon?" and Mac means Son and Williams means Son of William, and so on. Knowing what I mean when saying my name, the sense of it, is boring, and I disagree that the reference can give us much about the sense unless we ignore the reason why you think I write what I write.
So, I side more with Wimsatt, Jauss, Iser, Gadamer, and Eliot.
Also, regarding Frege, while I can separate the man from his ideas, some CUFfers do not take kindly to citing avowed Nazis. I prefer to look at his influence on the golem-rhyming Gershom Scholem's work, and leave all that other stuff behind, but not everyone will abide by that distinction.
Finally, I ask the <redacted> questions around here! I'm totally kidding."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.

Do they philosophy as a solitary major now? In the 70s BYU required a second major along with philosophy.Originally posted by thesaint258 View PostWelcome! I'm a philosophy major and attorney too. One of my best memories from undergrad was a girl at FHE asking me what my major was. When I told her it was philosophy, she looked at me right in the eye and told me I was going to hell. Any way welcome, welcome anyway

See, this is why I quit doing the welcome wagon wuap qwestions.
