  • My name is what?!?!

    How did you find CUF?
Can't remember exactly. I think I saw mention of it on Cougarboard. I'm kind of pissed no one told me about this place and I had to stumble upon it on my own. I was getting really sick of CB.

What do you like about CUF?
I really like that people here are (mostly) open minded. Many of you seem open to the idea that you might not know everything. I've long felt that it is healthy to look at things from multiple viewpoints and not to view the world as black and white and full of easy answers. You guys might not describe yourselves this way but that is the impression I get of many of you.

What don't I like about CUF?
Not much really. I suppose I could do without some of the smartalekiness (yes that is how I choose to spell it). Some posters seem to think they will make more internet friends if they mock someone after every post. I think maybe every third post would be more appropriate

How did you choose your moniker?
I had a mission companion give me this nickname. I've mentioned here before I lost about 40lbs on my mission and came home at 6'4" 140lbs. Fortunately, after a lot of hard work, I've managed to put on a lot more lbs of muscle. I stick with the nickname as a reminder to myself not to back down in my workout program because I don't want to end up like that again.

What do you do (other than read CUF)?
I'm a second year medical student. Not sure what kind of doc I want to be (that is always the next question). Right now I think I'd like to be an ER doc but I'll be able to make a more informed decision after I start rotations next year. Also I workout every day and I alternate between running and lifting. The time I have left I spend either with my wife and 2 year old son or watching movies or both.

How many States have you lived in?
Born in Idaho but left when I was three (good decision on my part). California until my mission (Dominican Republic). Then Utah for BYU and now I live in Arizona for med school. Wife wants to go back to UT so we'll probably end up there after residency.

    What are your sports loyalties?
In high school I did cross country and track (long jump triple jump and high jump but most of all pole vault) but didn't really pay attention to other sports until I got to college. While at BYU I discovered the awesomeness that is college sports and I'm a huge BYU football fan now. I should point out that I didn't grow up in Utah or in a family with any sports loyalties so I never became a Utah hater. I have no problem rooting for them until they play BYU. I also pay attention to BYU basketball when I have time.

What's your standing in the church?
I attend most weeks. I grew up pretty orthodox Mormon and it would kill my parents if I stopped going. The church makes my wife happy and that makes me happy. I think it does a lot of good things for a lot of people.

Do you pee in the sink?
I have but I don't really make a habit of it. I do, however have a funny story about that. My wife and I were once on a double date with one of my good friends and his gf. We went to this pizza place in Park City that had a restroom in the basement. We'd never been there before but my buddy and I both had to pee so we went down to the bathroom. We walked in the door and it shut behind us and at that point we noticed it was a one-toilet restroom. He was like "that is okay I'll just use the sink" and so we did our business. When we walked out the door, however, there was a line of guys waiting to get in. I don't know how so many people all showed up in what could only have been like one minute but what I do know is that we looked decidedly queer walking out of that bathroom together. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

When your kids get older, will you do drugs with them in order to teach them a responsible approach to drugs?
    Probably not.

Are you looking forward to Wuap's welcome question and what do you think it will be? Not really. Unless it is about pole vault.

Why are you so creepy? How long have you been lurking?
I'm a tall guy with a shaved head. Sometimes when I look in the mirror I think that makes me look creepy but it helps me get out of the house faster every morning. I'm always lurking....

Great to have you here. Thanks for the intro.

I'm also 6'4" and I went from 180 lbs to 220 lbs in the first 6 months of the mission. I couldn't fit into any of my suits.

Then I lost the 40 lbs over the next 18 months to come home at 180 lbs again. I can't imagine what I would look like at 140 lbs.

Welcome. I am glad to have you here.

Note: I looked up smartalekiness, couldn't find it. I was hoping to make sure you weren't talking about me.

Great to have you here, Slim.

And for the record, I think "jackassery" is the term you are looking for.

Yes I think that word fits better. Thanks.

Yeah. I was incredibly slim too, at 6'5" 140 after my freshman year at BYU. I would never, ever under any circumstances want to go back to that again. Of course most f my added weight is fat and not muscle but hey what can you do.

Glad you are here on the board. I have enjoyed your contributions.

I think we need to add more clergy here so that we can round out our ranks of the traditional professions. We do quite well among the doctor and lawyer set.

                    Welcome, welcome, Slim.

Welcome, Slim. As byu71 and I slip into our sunset years, it's especially gratifying to have an expanding corps of health professionals on board, and hope you'll give serious thought to elder care and Alzheimer's issues. You should go to the Ellis Island forum and introduce yourself!

Welcome and I wish to echo PAC sentiments about going into elder care

By the way, I wish I had your weight problems. I guess the grass is always greener

I may be small, but I'm slow.

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."

Maybe clergymen have better things to do than hang around a message board all day.

For getting paid so much, doctors and lawyers sure have a lot of free time.

Oh, and welcome, Slim. You seem like a cool guy.

I was thinking about CUF today and thought I’d come back and read what I was up to back when I made an account here. A lot has changed since then. I was in med school back when I made this post and next month will mark 9 years now that I’ve been an IM hospitalist attending.

I’m also solidly X-Mormon now. I’ve changed my position on whether the church does more good vs harm in the world and now believe it is a net negative and the world would be better off without it.

I had 2 kids when I signed up and now I have 4 ages 17 to 15 months. One of my kids is now also a type 1 diabetic and that has been a huge lifestyle adjustment.

I quit CB a couple years ago. Go sick of being banned from every interesting category. Problem was that some of those guys were my only friends. Outside of my wife and kids and work acquaintances I am pretty socially isolated and don’t really have any friends. I have no time for hobbies other than running and lifting which I still do every day. I used to travel a lot but the diabetes and new baby have made that difficult recently. I’m trying to do that more again, tho.

Anyway. I spent a little bit reading thru posts here and it was fun to see that so many of you I recognize are still around!
